The City of Summerville has a called budget meeting on Tuesday of this week at the Dewey Hoskins Gymnasium, but the 2020-2021 Fiscal Budget isn’t the only thing on the agenda. City officials apparently will be discussing the possibility of going ahead with a fireworks display for an Independence Day Celebration.
Earlier this year, the Summerville City Council had voted to pay the deposit on the fireworks show for the annual “Celebrate Independence” which was to be held at the Chattooga County Agricultural Center. Then COVID-19 closed city offices and altered planned events. The City put out a notice to the media saying that all city-sponsored events were canceled for the rest of the summer. The notice was not signed by the mayor or the city manager, but by a city employee.
Some council members mentioned that they were not consulted about the decision to cancel all events – and especially the Celebrate Independence event. At the last meeting there was discussion about the decision to cancel, but no action was taken.
The agenda for tomorrow’s meeting shows an item of discussion on proceeding with a fireworks display and paying the remainder of the money for the fireworks show.
WZQZ News will have more on any decision made by the Summerville City Council.
