A Chattooga County woman may be the victim of a sweepstakes scam. According to the report by the Chattooga County Sheriff's Department, a woman tried to cash a Wells Fargo check for $4,895 at National Title Pawn on Highway 27 on December 29.

The check reportedly turned out to be fraudulent. The woman told deputies she had received the check in the mail in an apparent internet sweepstakes and thought she was a winner. She said he had even received a winning notification claim letter.

The letter from Prime Alliance Inc. reportedly also requested a payment of $2,987 to be send in for government taxes. It is not indicated if the woman paid those supposed taxes. The incident was turned over to investigators.
