At last night’s Trion Town Council meeting, the council voted to move forward on applying for involvement in Georgia’s Department of Community Affairs “Community Home Improvement Program”, or CHIP, for short. After scheduling a work session next month to finalize the application, the council adjourned from a meeting that lasted just over 20 minutes.

For approved applicants, which is limited to local governments, public housing authorities, and nonprofits, the program can provide grants of up to $300,000 for fixing up owner-occupied homes, and grants of up to $600,000 for building and/or fixing up homes for sale.

The grant term is for two years. The application deadline is December 5th, and the council voted to meet for a work session on that date at 5:30 to finalize the application.

CHIP is funded by monies from the U.S. Dept. of Housing and Urban Development’s “HOME Investment Partnership Program”.

According to GDCA’s website, the “purpose of the Community HOME Investment Program (CHIP) is to provide safe, decent, and affordable housing in Georgia by granting funds to city and county governments, public housing authorities, and nonprofits to rehabilitate owner-occupied homes and build and renovate affordable single family homes for sale to eligible homebuyers.”
