A tractor trailer overturned early Wednesday morning that has shut down the southbound lane of Interstate 59 between Fort Payne and Collinsville.

Drivers are being detoured from the 218 exit in Fort Payne to U.S. 11 that runs parallel to the interstate to Collinsville where the interstate is open.

Fort Payne Police Commissioner Ron Ogletree said he estimates the wreck should take some time to clear.

“It’s going to keep the interstate shut down until at least after lunch,” Ogletree said.

Ogletree said information provided to him indicated a car apparently forced the truck off the road, and when the driver attempted to re-enter the roadway, it overturned near the 215 mile marker. He said the wreck happened about 5 a.m.

DeKalb Emergency Management Agency Director Mike Leath said the truck was carrying non-hazardous materials. A Hazmat team was called in to clean up 45-50 gallons of diesel fuel spilled from the truck.

Ogletree said the driver was taken to DeKalb Regional Medical Center and is being treated for non-life threatening injuries.
