Alabama Man Arrested for Child Enticement

An Undercover Operation in Dekalb County has resulted in the arrest of a Rainsville man on charges of Enticing a Child.

According to Sheriff Jimmy Harris – School Resource Officer, Deputy Scott Tarrant, had received information on Friday from the mother of a 14 year old female regarding several sexually explicit text messages the mother had found on her daughter’s cell phone.

The messages appeared to have come from a 30 year old male subject identified as David Ray McSpadden, of Rainsville, who was reportedly a friend of a friend of the daughter.

McSpadden had commented through the messages that he wanted to meet with the girl.

Deputy Tarrant took the cell phone, and continued texting with McSpadden, as if he were the 14 year old girl.

Through the text messages, arrangements were made for McSpadden to come to the girl’s residence with the girl’s parents allowing officers to use their home for a sting operation.

When McSpadden arrived at the location, he was arrested without incident by Deputy Jon Hill and Lt. Josh York.

After confiscating the suspect’s phone, officers discovered several explicit text messages describing sexual acts – there were also nude photographs that he’d taken of himself, and sent to the girl.

McSpadden was taken into custody, and was charged with Enticing a Child for Immoral Purposes, and Dissemination of Material Harmful to Minors – he currently remains in jail awaiting bond.

The investigation into the matter continues and additional charges are possible.

Sheriff Jimmy Harris, urges parents to continue to monitor their children’s cell-phone and computer use – adding that there’s no reason why we shouldn’t stay informed about just exactly who our kids are talking to, and what’s going on in their lives.

More Sock Jobs Lost in Ft. Payne

Company Officials announced on Friday that DeSoto Mills in Fort Payne will close, leaving 104 without jobs.

The announcement comes on the heels of the layoff of hundreds of workers from Cooper Hosiery in Fort Payne. DeKalb County Economic Development Agency Director Jimmy Durham said Thursday Cooper laid off about 269 workers in December.

John Shivel, Sr., vice president of communications for Fruit of the Loom – DeSoto’s parent company – said the company’s Fort Payne facility would begin permanently shutting down beginning on or around March 9. He said the mill would be completely closed by June 1.

He said the shutdown is the result of "continued consolidation efforts by the company to remain competitive in a global competitive market."  He said sales and support operations would be relocated to the company headquarters in Bowling Green, Ky., while distribution operations would be absorbed into the company’s other existing distribution centers.

Durham said he hopes DeKalb County is nearing "the end" of hosiery mill layoffs.

Durham said, despite the downturn, some local hosiery companies such as Renfro Hosiery  are performing well. He said there are plans for expansion at Renfro.

Veterans Rase Money for Dade County Soldier

Local Georgia veterans have connected with supporters from Maine to Montana to raise money for a local soldier whose tools were stolen during his overseas deployment.

"We want him to come home and not focus on what happened to him but what has happened for him," said Bill Lockhart, senior vice commander of American Legion Post 106 in Trenton, Ga.

Thieves stole tools and the pickup truck that his friend, Spc. Jeffery Farmer, had planned to use to start a tree service when he returned from his current deployment in Afghanistan, Mr. Lockhart said.

Spc. Farmer is deployed with the 1st Battalion, 121st Infantry Regiment, 48th Infantry Brigade in Ghazni, Afghanistan. It’s his third tour during the Iraq and Afghanistan campaigns.

The specialist could not be reached for comment.

Since the November thefts, Mr. Lockhart has spread the word to friends and on message boards about Spc. Farmer’s predicament.

The goal, Mr. Lockhart said, is to raise $20,000 by Spc. Farmer’s return in late February. That amount will replace the tools but not the truck, so he is working with VFW members to help with more donations, he said.

Far north of Dade County, Ga., friends of Mr. Lockhart are holding a benefit concert on Jan. 25 in Newport, Maine. Joe Lovely, owner of BBs Tattoo Shop in Newport, heard of the soldier’s problem and organized the event.

He said the benefit is just a way to contribute.

"These soldiers, they’re going over to do their duty, and people here are taking advantage of them," Mr. Lovely said of the thefts.

Closer to home, the American Legion Post in Trenton has a Feb. 5 benefit planned that will feature a poetry reading, jazz and bluegrass performances with door prizes and a silent auction.

Mr. Lockhart also has been working on a side project to collect a T-shirt from each of the 50 states. The shirts will be used to create a wall to show Spc. Farmer "that his whole country supports him," Mr. Lockhart said.

Larry Hester, with both VFW Post 3679 in Fort Oglethorpe and American Legion Post 217 in Chickamauga, Ga., said members will meet with area business owners and car dealerships to see about donations.

"We definitely want to do something for this young man," Mr. Hester said. "There’s a lot of them coming home to a lot of problems but not coming home (to find) everything they had stolen."
