Weekend Combine Fire in Centre

Centre Fire Department responded to a combine fire late Saturday afternoon at Dixie Green on County Road 69 East of Centre. The fire started in the engine compartment according to the owner, Hank Richardson. The machine suffered major damage before the blaze could be extinguished by the fire department. There were no injuries.

Floyd Cops Search for Shooter

Floyd County Police are investigating the shooting of an unidentified man in the parking lot of the Cadillac Club on Cave Spring Road around 2:30 a.m. Sunday.

According to Detective Jeff Jones, the victim was rushed by friends to Floyd Medical Center shortly after he was shot in the upper leg area after he was involved in an altercation with a suspect.

“At some point during the altercation someone pulled out a weapon and fired a round,” Jones said.

Jones said the victim, whose name police are not yet releasing, was released from Floyd Medical Center after receiving treatment Sunday.

He also said police had leads into who the suspect might be.

“We’re confident we’re going to find the shooter,” he said.

Shortly after the shooting incident, Jones said a person went into the Kangaroo at Cave Spring Road and U.S. Highway 27 South and tried to use a bloody $10 bill. He said the two incidents might not even be connected, but that police are looking into it regardless.

 

Chattooga & Trion in Session Monday

Both local school systems will be back on their regular schedule on Monday morning after kids enjoyed a snow day last Friday.

Kids had just returned to classes in both Trion City and Chattooga County Schools on Wednesday of last week after Christmas break.  They got released early on Thursday as a small amount of snow caused some problems throughout the county and were out again on Friday.

2012 Target Date for New GNTC Campus

GEORGIA NORTHWESTERN TECHNICAL COLLEGE NOW SAYS THE NEW SATELLITE CAMPUS IN CATOOSA COUNTY SHOULD BE READY TO OPEN IN MID-2012.  CONSTRUCTION SHOULD TAKE 12 TO 16 MONTHS, ONCE PLANS ARE FINALIZED. 

SOME HAD COMPLAINED THAT THE SITE IS SITUATED IN A FLOOD PLAIN… BUT GNTC OFFICIALS SAY THERE IS ENOUGH PROPERTY OUTSIDE THE FLOOD PLAIN TO CONSTRUCT THE PLANNED FACILITY.  IT’S NEAR THE INTERSECTION OF CLOUD SPRINGS AND DIETZ ROADS.  THE SATELLITE CAMPUS SHOULD HAVE 65,000 SQUARE FEET UNDER ROOF. 

THE NEW FACILITY WILL BE FINANCED WITH BONDS TOTALING 10.6-MILLION DOLLARS.

Chattooga Resident Arrested in Walker County

A Chattooga County resident was reported to have been arrested in Walker County between December 30th and January 5th according to docket records from the Walker County Sheriff’s Department:

Charles Anthony Bright, of Scoggins Lane, Summerville, driving while license suspended or revoked, driving on roadways laned for traffic.

Death Sentence Overturned in Walker Co. Murder

THE DEATH SENTENCE HAS BEEN OVERTURNED FOR A MAN WHO KIDNAPPED AND KILLED A PREGNANT WALKER COUNTY WOMAN IN 1989.  JAMES RAY WARD WILL GET A NEW SENTENCING HEARING, AFTER THE RULING BY A FEDERAL APPEALS PANEL.  23 YEAR OLD NIKIA GILBREATH AND HER UNBORN CHILD WERE KILLED BY WARD IN 1989… HIS CONVICTIONS STILL STAND. BUT THE THREE JUDGE PANEL RULED THAT THERE WAS "IMPROPER BAILIFF-JURY COMMUNICATION" DURING THE PENALTY PHASE OF HIS TRIAL. THE BAILIFF, WHEN ASKED BY JURORS, REPORTEDLY TOLD THEM THAT A SENTENCE OF LIFE WITHOUT PAROLE FOR WARD, WAS "NOT AN OPTION".  THE VICTIM WAS 5 MONTHS PREGNANT WHEN SHE WAS ABDUCTED FROM HER HOME IN VILLANOW AND KILLED.

Flu Clinics Coming up in Chattooga County

 

Summerville, GA:  The Chattooga County Health Department will conduct H1N1 (swine flu) flu-shot clinics Wednesday, January 13, from 4:30 PM to 8:30 PM at the Summerville Recreation Department and Thursday, January 14, from 4:30 PM to 8:30 PM at the Trion Recreation Department, according to health department nurse Manager Mitzi Smith.  Smith noted that the health department will close at 4 PM both days.

The H1N1 vaccine is free; however, clients are asked to please bring their private insurance, Medicare, Medicare supplement, PeachCare or Medicaid card as a small administration fee may be charged to their insurance.  "No client will be billed or expected to pay," Smith stressed and adds "clients with no insurance will not be charged or expected to pay." 

 

According to Smith, "we have plenty H1N1 vaccine now and are offering it to anyone over the age of six months who wants to receive it, but we’re still encouraging people in high-risk groups especially to get the vaccine."  Those high-risk groups for H1N1 are: 

  • pregnant women,

  • care givers of infants less than 6 months of age,  

  • children and young adults aged 6 months to 24 years,

  • persons aged 25 – 64 years who have medical conditions, such as asthma, diabetes, heart disease, chronic lung disease and immunosuppressive disorders,  that put them at risk and

  • health care and emergency service workers.
