A Lyerly man was arrested after an incident at Trade Day on Tuesday in Summerville. According to information received by AM 1180, Joe David Reynolds, age 64 of Lyerly was accused of “flashing a gun” at a vendor at trade day. Apparently Mr. Reynolds was involved in an argument with one of the vendors at trade day when the alleged incident took place. Reportedly, Reynolds left the Trade Day grounds and was pulled over in Summerville on Commerce Street and arrested for “pointing / aiming a gun or pistol at another.” Reynolds was released from jail on bond.
When Highway 337 north of Menlo sank 8" nine days ago, no one could have imagined that the road would remain closed for two weeks.
The first problem the Georgia Department of Transportation encountered was there were no tiles available to fix the problem. The heavy rains of the past several weeks caused the rusting tile to wash out on Highway 337 and the state department of transportation is fixing the problem by installing two bigger tiles. Secondly, the DOT had to wait on the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service to inspect the area due to what they identified as 11 endangered species in the area around Chelsea Creek.
Now the Georgia Department of Transportation says that is taking longer than they anticipated to do the actual work of installing the tiles. Chattooga County Public Works Director Lamar Canada told AM 1180 on Wednesday evening that a spokesperson with the State DOT says that it will be sometime next week, probably after next Wednesday before the road is fixed. Workers are anticipating getting in another good day of work tommorrow before more precipitation moves into the area on Friday, and hope to finish the project sometime by the middle of next week.

Chattooga County has signed an agreement with the US Census Bureau that will allow the agency to use space at the Chattooga County Civic Center for a Questionaire Assistance Center.
Commissioner Jason Winters said that it is important that the residents of Chattooga County fill out the US Census and turn them back in so that the agency can get an accurate count. The county needs the census to qualify for federal dollars that will otherwise be lost if an accurate count is not made.
Winters said that over the past years, Chattooga County has had a relatively low return to the US Census Bureau.
An investigation into inappropriate contact between inmates and two Floyd County employees has resulted in disciplinary action against a correctional officer. In September an investigation was launched into allegations that an inmate and a clerical worker in the Floyd County Tax Assessor’s Office had formed a relationship.
Floyd County Prison Warden Jeff Chandler says the relationship with the clerical workers and the inmates included phone conversations, the giving of items not authorized by the Warden, deposits of money into the inmate’s account, pictures, and mail correspondence.
Chandler says the employee resigned after the allegations were substantiated. Then, on January the 2nd, additional information was obtained that indicated another Tax Assessor’s Office employee was engaged in the same type of activity. That employee also resigned. Chandler said the officer, Richard Worley, was negligent in his supervision of inmates. Worley has been demoted, reassigned and put on one year’s probation.

An out of town organizer is planning a "Tea Party" Rally in Chattooga County tommorrow evening. The event is being organized in part by Jim Groce from Chickamauga. The group’s speaker for the evening will be Republican Candidate for Governor of Georgia Ray Mc Berry.
McBerry – who ran against Governor Perdue in the 2008 Republican Primary – is orginally from Henry County and claims "states rights" as part of his agenda for governor. According to McBerry’s campaign web-site he proposes the abolition of income and property taxes and going to an increased sales tax to fund a state government that would have limited services. In fact McBerry calls income tax a "Marxist" idea.
McBerry also talks about an issue on his web site not heard often in Georgia politics today – segregation. McBerry states: "I support the right of freedom of association and abhor such things as government-imposed segregation and government-imposed integration." (http://www.georgiafirst.org/governor/q&a.shtml)
Mr. Groce spoke with AM 1180 Chattooga County Radio earlier this month and said that his group is non-partisan and is simply a group of "grass root citizens concerned about the direction of our country." Groce said there will be a $5.00 charge to cover the cost of the food provided at the event, which will be held at Pop’s in Summerville. He wants to find out how much interest there is in his group from the citizens of Chattooga County.
There is no charge for the meeting, but there will be a $5 for food at Pops.
