The Jacksonville State Marching Southerners and Ballerinas were in London, England on New Years Day. The group lead the 2012 London New Year’s Day Parade. Even more significant is the fact that the parade was the official kick off of the Queen Elizabeth II’s Diamond Jubilee and the 2012 Olympics. Trion High School graduate Aarron Bryant plays for The Southerners, Jacksonville State University’s marching band – and participated in the festivities observed by the Queen and the Royal Family. The Marching Southerners and Ballerinas will return on January 4th.

Georgia Under Pressure Regarding “Race to the Top”

Georgia is getting pressure from the U.S. Education Department to follow through on promises the state made last year to win $400 million in the "Race to the Top" grant competition.

The Atlanta Journal-Constitution reports that a draft progress report shows Georgia was slow to fill 21 jobs considered key to completing the state’s education reform plans. That means the state is about six months behind in piloting its teacher evaluation system, which begins next month.

The report notes that state officials are finding it difficult to communicate with the public about Race to the Top initiatives, which could create challenges when the new teacher evaluation system is rolled out statewide.
