North Georgia EMC line crews have worked through the night restoring power to customers affected by yesterday’s heavy snow fall. As of 4:30 a.m., approximately 400 members are without power due to damaged trees and power lines from the weight of the snow. Extremely poor road conditions slow restoration progress in many areas. The majority of current outages are located in Gordon and Catoosa counties, with smaller pockets of outages in Chattooga, Murray, Walker, Whitfield and Floyd counties. If trees weighed down by snow and ice continue to fall, outage numbers may increase. Crews will remain on duty until all power has been restored.
Outage information, including a map of outage locations, can be found at www.ngemc.com.Updates will also be posted to the North Georgia EMC Facebook and Twitter sites. To report outages, members may download the My NGEMC Mobile App for iPhone™ and Android™ devices, or they may call one of NGEMC’s local offices 24/7. During widespread outages, hold times may be affected due to an extremely high call volume.
Because of poor road conditions, NGEMC customer lobbies and drive-thrus will operate on a delayed schedule today, opening at 10 a.m. Service disconnections are suspended during this weather event.
NGEMC provides electricity in Catoosa, Chattooga, Floyd, Gordon, Murray, Walker, and Whitfield counties.
Authorities in the two neighboring counties in Alabama are cautioning no travel Thursday morning. Alabama State officials declared a civil emergency on Wednesday evening after deeming Alabama state and county roads impassable.
DeKalb County, Alabama Sheriff Jimmy Harris issued a curfew that ends at 6 AM, but is still cautioning travelers to stay off of the state and county roads until later this morning. Cherokee County, Alabama officials said that roads are snow covered and will remain that way until mid-morning.
Any travel to Alabama should be done this afternoon, when temperatures are expected to get above freezing. There is concern about re-freezing overnight tonight and the possibility of black ice on Friday morning.
Roads in Floyd County are snow covered this morning according to Floyd County Public Safety.
Officials in Floyd County say that it is going to take some time and effort to clear the roads so they are asking that you allow the emergency personnel the opportunity to continue their work undisturbed by increased traffic volume on the roadways.
Floyd County Public Safety says:
“The temperature will rise above freezing by mid- morning which will aid in their efforts of snow and ice removal.
They will be hard pressed to clear off the roadways before dark as the temperature will drop below freezing again causing the roads to re-freeze with patches of black ice developing to cause additional traffic difficulties for commuters on Friday.
If you have to be on the roadways, please exercise caution when driving under slick, icy road conditions and be aware of the emergency equipment operating on the roadways.”
For Thursday morning, Chattooga County residents are being asked to stay put for a while. Highway 27 at Taylor's Ridge is open, but there is snow and ice to contend with. The same is true for Highway 48 at Cloudland. Chattooga County Public Works Director Joe Reed told AM 1180 earlier this morning that his department will be out in force this morning working on county roads, but that by 10 AM most travel problems should be minimal. That will give Public Works time to work on some of the more heavily traveled county roads, and temperatures are expected to rise above freezing by 10 AM in most areas as well.
