Mr. Edward Dale Chastain, Obit (M)

Mr. Edward Dale Chastain, age 70, of Summerville, GA, died Friday, August 26, 2022, at Advent Health Redmond.

Mr. Chastain was born September 1, 1951, in Rome, GA, son of the late Edward Eugene and Lucille Fite Chastain. He was a member of Silver Hill Baptist Church and was employed with Mohawk. He was a Sergeant in the United States Army having served in Vietnam.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, Martha Parsons Chastain; brother, Donnie Chastain; and a sister, Ann McCoy.  Survivors include his sister-in-law, Elaine Chastain; and a nephew, Shane Chastain.

Graveside services will be held at 11:00 A.M. Monday, August 29, 2022, at Silver Hill Cemetery with Rev. Thomas Farmer officiating. Pallbearers will be nephews and friends.

Mr. Chastain will be in state at Mason Funeral Home and the family will receive friends from 9:30 until 10:30 A.M. on Monday.

Mr. Dearl Rex Cook, Obit (C)

Mr. Dearl Rex Cook, age 84 of Summerville, Georgia passed away Wednesday, August 24, 2022 at his residence.

Mr. Cook was born in Summerville, Georgia on April 14, 1938, son of the late Clarence Ellis Cook and Annie Ruth Spain Cook. He was a member of the Wayside Baptist Church and prior to retirement, was employed in the Maintenance Department of Mt. Vernon Mills. He enjoyed woodworking, especially making walking sticks, loved to tinker around in his shops and loved going to Trade Day. In addition to his parents, Mr. Cook was preceded in death by his brother, Francis Ellis “Cookie” Cook and a son-in-law, Greg Eaves.

Mr. Cook is survived by his wife, Imogene Holloway Cook; sons, Greg and Gail Cook and Scott and Melissa Cook; daughters and son-in-law, Annette Cook Eaves and Gina and Jimbo Crabtree; 8 grandchildren; 16 great grandchildren and a number of nieces and nephews.

Graveside and Interment services for Mr. Cook will be held Wednesday, August 31, 2022 at 4:30 P.M. in the West Hill Cemetery with Rev. Ricky Harris officiating. Rev. John Hayes will have a prayer with the family at the funeral home.

Pallbearers will be Scott Cook, Lamar Gilliland, Kevin Gilliland, Joey Mitchell, Wade Eaves and Toby Morrison. Honorary Pallbearers will be Mr. Cook’s Friends.

Mr. Cook will be in state at the Coffman Funeral Home and the family will receive friends Wednesday, August 31, 2022 from 3:00 P.M. until 4:00 P.M.

Georgia Council For The Arts Awards 253 Grants Including Paradise Garden Foundation

Georgia Council for the Arts, a strategic arm of the Georgia Department of Economic Development (GDEcD), today announced the recipients of its Bridge, Project, and Arts Education grants as part of its initial disbursement of grants for fiscal year 2023, which began on July 1. A total of 253 grants were awarded for arts initiatives throughout the state. This year’s more than $3.1 million in grant funding is an increase of more than $1 million over last year’s total.  The Paradise Garden Foundation in Chattooga County was one of the recipients.

BOE Millage Rate Set In 3-2 Vote

The Chattooga Board of Educated voted to set the millage rate at 12.0 mills at a meeting held earlier this week.  The millage rate is a roll back from the previous rate, but with increased property assessments, will result in an increase in property taxes for Chattooga County taxpayers.
