The descendants of John Wesley and Nancy Bowman Smith will gather at Menlo Park on Sunday September 24th at noon. Everyone is asked to bring a covered dish to share.

Sue Mason Phillips, Obit (M)

Mrs. Sue Mason Phillips, age 85, of Summerville, GA, passed away peacefully on Thursday, September 21, 2023, at her home surrounded by family.

Sue was born November 17, 1937, in Blanche, AL, daughter of the late William “Bill” and Bessie Crane Mason.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her children’s fathers, Bill Ezell, Jess Tucker, and her husband, Boney Phillips; sisters, Nora Lee Mason, Ann Tucker, and Cledia Woods.

Sue was an avid Elvis Fan and enjoyed Elvis’ music and collecting his memorabilia. She was retired from Courageous Home Health. She loved the special people she was able to meet and serve. It suited her servant heart. Her life was a living example of Ephesians 6:7-8, “Serve wholeheartedly, as if you were serving the Lord, not people, because you know that the Lord will reward each one for whatever good they do.” Sue’s passions were her family, her pet dog, Star, and being an Elvis Fan.

She loved her family and helped everyone she knew and did it with so much love. She will be missed, but her love, grace, and generosity will live on through everyone who knew her.

The mother of 3 sons, she is survived by her sons, Glen (Rita) Ezell, Joey Ezell, and Shannon (Joanna) Tucker; sisters, Lucille Wood, Joyce Burke, and Judy Tucker; grandchildren, Sonja Ezell Price, Brian Ezell, Hope Ezell, Kaylee (Jay) Williams, Caleb Tucker, Ester Sue Tucker, and one bonus grandson; 6 great-grandchildren; and 4 great-great-grandchildren; and a host of nieces and nephews. Sue will be will be greatly missed by her faithful fur baby companion, Star.

Funeral services for Mrs. Phillips will be held at 11:00 A.M. Saturday, September 23, 2023, from the Mason Funeral Home Chapel with her loving sons officiating. Interment will follow in Weiss Lake Memorial Gardens in Gaylesville, AL, with her nephew, James “Jimbo” Burke officiating. Active pallbearers will be Ryan Price, Jamie Tucker, Jay Williams, Brannon Ezell, and John Tucker. Honorary pallbearers will be her caregivers, Remona Wright, Opal Deering, Vickie Darnell, Relady Bishop, and Brooke Brock;,as well as the Staff of Menlo Restaurant and of Chattanooga Hospice.

Mrs. Phillips will be in state at Mason Funeral Home and the family will receive friends from 6:00 until 8:00 P.M. on Friday.
At other hours, the family will gather at 851 Mockingbird Lane off of Trion-Teloga Road in Trion. Look for the yellow ribbon.

GSP Updated On Friday’s Taylor’s Ridge Accident

Here is an update from the Georgia State Patrol on the Friday morning crash on Highway 27 at Taylor’s Ridge that snarled traffic for several hours:

 Troopers were dispatched to a serious injury crash on GA 1 near Kirby Hollow Road involving a Dodge pickup and a single-axle logging truck. Vehicle 1, a Dodge, and Vehicle 2, a logging truck, were traveling SB on GA 1 (Highway 27) in the right lane. Vehicle 1 struck the rear of Vehicle 2 with its front. The impact caused several logs to travel through the cab of vehicle 1. Driver 1 was transported to Atrium-Floyd Hospital for NON-life-threatening injuries to his chest and head. MCCD arrived on the scene and conducted a vehicle inspection on vehicle 2. Vehicle 2 was placed out of service for mechanical issues, and driver 2 operated a CMV vehicle without a CDL License. Godfrey Tree Service was able to remove the logs from vehicle 2. Gills and Luallen’s wrecker service removed both vehicles. The SB lanes were shut down for 3 hours. Crash #C00090419

Chatttooga Football on WZQZ Tonight!

Tune in tonight for Chattooga Indian football on WZQZ!  The Indians will go on the road tonight to Lindale to take on the Pepperell Dragons in their first region game of the year.  Chattooga is currently 1-3 on the season after a tough homecoming loss last week to Murray County 28-21.  Pepperell is also 1-3 on the season after losses to Northwest Whitfield, Model and Woodland Cartersville.  The Dragons notched their first win of the season last week at home against Temple 19-14.

Join Robert and Gray Beach tonight as they will call the action live from Lindale.  The game will be broadcast live on the radio on 99.1 FM and AM 1180.  The game will also be live video streamed on the WZQZ Facebook page.  Kickoff is at 7:30 pm.

The Trion Bulldogs are off this week and will resume action next Friday night on the road at Dade County for their first region game of the season.

Rome Teen Remains Hospitalized After Chase From Alabama Into Chattooga County

A nineteen-year-old Rome man remains hospitalized after trying to outrun law enforcement on Wednesday afternoon.  WZQZ News spoke with Chattooga County Sheriff Mark Schrader on Thursday evening.  Sheriff Schrader said that Jamon Kenterius Allen, age 19, remains in a Rome hospital but will be facing multiple charges in Chattooga County.   Allen will also be facing charges in Cherokee County, Alabama in connection with the chase.

Town of Lyerly Cancels Municipal Elections

The Town of Lyerly has cancelled their municipal elections that were to have been held the first Tuesday of November.  According to the Lyerly Town Clerk, Sally Kerce, both candidates who qualified for office for seats #3 and #4 are unopposed.  Phillip Brooks and James Gilliland will be serving on the council since they faced no opposition and the town will not have to hold an election.

Important Summerville Municipal Election Dates

Voters in the City of Summerville will be going to the polls on the first Tuesday in November to vote on three council seats.  Advance and early voting for the election will begin on Monday, October 16, 2023 and continue until Friday, November 3, 2023 at Summerville City Hall, located at 120 Georgia Avenue in Summerville.  Voting hours will be from 9 AM until 5 PM.  Advance voting will also be available on Saturday, October 21, 2023 and Saturday, October 28, 2023 between the hours of 9 AM and 5 PM at Summerville City Hall.  Applications for absentee ballots must be received by Friday, October 27, 2023.  The last day to register to vote in the Summerville municipal election is Monday, October 10, 2023.  The polls will be open on Election Day from 7 AM until 7 PM.  If a runoff election is necessary, that would be held on Tuesday, December 5, 2023 at Summerville City Hall.
