Georgia Northwestern Technical College’s Office of Adult Education held its Fall 2025 Graduation Ceremony on Thursday, Dec. 18, honoring students who earned their High School Equivalency (HSE) diplomas.
The ceremony took place at the Conference Center on GNTC’s Gordon County Campus in Calhoun, allowing graduates and families from all nine counties in GNTC’s service area to attend.
Lisa Shaw, vice president of Adult Education at GNTC, opened the evening by congratulating graduates for persevering through personal and academic challenges. Shaw praised students for continuing to show up despite obstacles, reminding them of their resilience and ability to overcome adversity.
“You are capable. You are resilient, and you can do hard things,” Shaw told the graduates.
The guest speaker was Jayden Allen, GNTC’s 2026 EAGLE (Exceptional Adult Georgian in Literacy Education) delegate, who will represent the college at the state competition in March. Allen, a Lindale resident, shared her journey through multiple school changes, learning challenges, and personal hardship before earning her HSE through GNTC’s Adult Education program in June.
Allen credited GNTC’s Accelerated Academy with helping her achieve what once felt impossible, earning her HSE in just three days. She is currently enrolled in GNTC’s Health Care Assistant certificate program and plans to pursue a diploma in Health Information Coding.
GNTC President Dr. Heidi Popham reminded graduates that education is a lifelong journey, praising them for choosing growth instead of being defined by setbacks.
“This accomplishment is not an end; it is the beginning of a new chapter filled with many possibilities,” Popham said.
Laurie Brooks, Adult Education Career Services specialist, presented diplomas, while Derrick McDaniel, Adult Education instruction director, recognized honor graduates. Shaw concluded the ceremony with the traditional turning of the tassels.
The Adult Education program also recognized numerous community organizations and partners that provided scholarships supporting student success.
GNTC’s Adult Education program offers Adult Basic Education, Adult Secondary Education, English as a Second Language (ESL), and preparation for the Georgia HSE, helping adults gain skills for employment, family stability, and civic engagement.
