Residents across Chattooga County and the Northwest Georgia region should expect another round of scattered showers and thunderstorms this afternoon, though forecasters say severe weather is not expected at this time.
Rain lingering from yesterday’s system will gradually move out of the area through the afternoon, with most storms weakening as available atmospheric energy has been largely used up. While a few rumbles of thunder remain possible, especially farther south in Georgia, most local areas will mainly see periods of rain.
Showers are expected to taper off from west to east later today, with most of the region clearing out by this evening.
Temperatures will remain unusually warm for early March. Even with rain-cooled air today keeping highs in the lower 70s, a return to warmer weather is expected quickly. Forecasters say temperatures across Northwest Georgia could climb back into the 80s early this week — roughly 15 to 20 degrees above normal and approaching daily record highs.
Rain chances will continue each day through early next week as a warm, humid air mass stays in place across the Southeast. Another round of showers and thunderstorms is possible late Monday into Tuesday as a weather disturbance moves through the region. While widespread severe weather is not currently expected, meteorologists say the situation will be monitored closely.
Later in the week, another storm system and cold front could bring a more organized round of storms to Georgia sometime Wednesday into Thursday before cooler and drier air arrives heading into next weekend.
Rainfall totals through Monday are expected to range from a tenth to a half inch, which could help ongoing dry conditions across parts of the region. Flooding concerns remain low.
Residents are encouraged to stay weather aware throughout the week as conditions may change with upcoming storm systems.
