A Summerville man was arrested earlier this month following a traffic stop on Highway 27 in Chattooga County.
According to an incident report from the Chattooga County Sheriff’s Office, 53-year-old William Hershel Watkins was charged with DUI (alcohol) and failure to maintain lane following the March 18 stop.
A deputy reported observing a black Nissan Altima traveling southbound near the Trion Water Treatment Plant crossing into both lanes of traffic. After initiating a stop, the driver was identified as Watkins.
The report states that deputies detected a strong odor of alcohol coming from Watkins, and noted that his eyes were bloodshot and watery and his speech was slurred. Authorities also reported that Watkins appeared unsteady on his feet when exiting the vehicle.
According to the report, Watkins declined to perform standardized field sobriety tests and also refused a breath test.
Deputies determined that Watkins was impaired and took him into custody without incident. He was later transported to the Chattooga County Jail.
Authorities say Watkins was also issued an administrative license suspension.
