Hot and humid summertime weather continues across Northwest Georgia today, with temperatures climbing into the lower 90s and scattered thunderstorms developing during the afternoon. A few storms across far North Georgia could become strong enough to produce damaging wind gusts.

The forecast calls for mostly sunny skies Sunday with a high near 92 degrees. Humidity will make it feel considerably hotter, with heat index values reaching around 100 degrees. There is a 30 percent chance of showers and thunderstorms, mainly after 2 p.m.

Forecasters say atmospheric conditions will become increasingly favorable for thunderstorm development this afternoon as moisture increases across the region. Dewpoints are expected to reach the middle 70s, while instability could reach 2,000 to 2,500 J/kg across portions of North Georgia.

While the overall risk for widespread severe weather remains low, some thunderstorms across far North Georgia could produce isolated damaging wind gusts. Heavy downpours are also possible with stronger storms. Most thunderstorm activity should diminish after sunset.

Tonight will be partly cloudy with a 30 percent chance of showers and thunderstorms, mainly before 8 p.m. The overnight low will be around 72 degrees.

Monday brings another hot and humid afternoon. The high will be near 91, but heat index values could climb to around 101 degrees. Thunderstorms become more likely late in the afternoon, with a 60 percent chance of precipitation. Monday night will be mostly clear with a low near 73.

The familiar summertime pattern continues through the remainder of the week, with highs generally around 90 to 92 degrees and daily opportunities for afternoon and evening thunderstorms.

Tuesday carries a 40 percent chance of showers and thunderstorms with a high near 91. Wednesday’s rain chance increases to 50 percent, mainly during the afternoon, with another high near 91. Thursday should reach around 92 with a 30 percent chance of afternoon storms.

Friday could be somewhat cloudier with a 40 percent chance of thunderstorms and a high near 90. Saturday is expected to be mostly sunny outside of scattered thunderstorms, with a high near 92.

Heat will become an increasing concern as the week progresses. A combination of temperatures in the lower to middle 90s and high humidity could push heat index values into the triple digits. Forecasters indicate Heat Advisory criteria could eventually be reached in portions of the region if current trends continue.

In addition to gusty winds, thunderstorms throughout the week will be capable of producing locally heavy rainfall. Isolated flash flooding cannot be ruled out where storms repeatedly affect the same locations.
