Northwest Georgia will get one more day of hot, dry weather Thursday before a significant change brings increasing rain chances and much cooler temperatures for the weekend.
Thursday will be sunny with a high near 90, about 8 to 10 degrees above normal for early October. Thursday night will remain mostly clear with a low around 66.
Moisture begins increasing Friday. The day will start mostly sunny with a high near 90, but there is a 30 percent chance of showers and thunderstorms late Friday afternoon, increasing to 40 percent Friday night.
The National Weather Service says confidence is increasing that Saturday and Sunday will be rainy, as a frontal boundary and unusually high atmospheric moisture move into the region.
Saturday will be mostly cloudy with a 70 percent chance of rain, especially during the afternoon, and a high around 82. Rain and thunderstorms remain likely Saturday night.
Sunday looks cooler and wet, with a 70 percent chance of showers and thunderstorms and a high of only 76.
Forecasters say the greatest potential for heavier rainfall appears to be Saturday evening through Sunday evening. There remains considerable uncertainty about rainfall totals, but some forecast guidance indicates several inches could fall in portions of North Georgia. Localized flash flooding could become a concern if the heavier projections materialize.
Despite the possibility of thunderstorms, the National Weather Service says the current setup does not appear favorable for severe weather.
The front will also bring a noticeable change in temperatures. Monday’s high will be around 79 before sunshine returns Tuesday and Wednesday with highs in the mid to upper 70s and nighttime temperatures eventually falling into the lower 50s.
The wet weekend forecast has already prompted changes to Saturday’s Sum Nelly Festival in Summerville, which is moving to East Washington Street and shortening its hours to 9 AM until 3 PM.
