A historic iron bridge over Armuchee Creek in Floyd County is closed this week as crews replace its wooden deck.

Floyd County Public Works closed the single-lane bridge on Little Texas Valley Road beginning at 8 a.m. Monday, October 12. Repairs are expected to be completed by 4 p.m. Thursday, October 15, weather and construction conditions permitting.

The bridge is located between U.S. Highway 27, also known as Martha Berry Highway, and Scenic Road, near the Armuchee Post Office.

Motorists can use Scenic Road as an alternate route to and from Highway 27 North. Drivers should follow any posted detour signs and allow additional travel time.

No vehicles will be permitted to cross the bridge during the repairs.

A Bridge With More Than A Century Of History

The iron bridge is a longtime landmark in the Armuchee community, with a history connected to the area’s early mills and industrial development.

According to historical accounts of Armuchee, an iron bridge was constructed at the crossing around 1910 or 1911, replacing an earlier wooden bridge. Another historical account dates the present Warren pony truss structure to 1935.

The bridge stands near the remains of an old milldam that once provided waterpower for local industry. Armuchee was once a busy commercial center with grist mills, a pants factory, sawmills, cotton gins and a railroad connection.

The old dam, located just downstream from the iron bridge, once created a sizable body of water extending upstream into Texas Valley. Historical accounts describe the area as a popular fishing destination in the early 1900s.

The bridge itself is a Warren pony truss design, recognizable by its triangular steel framework along both sides of the roadway.

The crossing has required maintenance over the years, including previous wooden deck replacement work. Most recently, Floyd County closed the bridge in June 2025 after damage to the deck surface created a hazard for motorists.

The bridge is also located near the historic Farmer’s Bridge crossing, where Union and Confederate cavalry forces clashed during the Atlanta Campaign in May 1864. A Georgia historical marker along U.S. 27 commemorates that Civil War encounter.

Floyd County Public Works expects the current deck replacement project to be completed Thursday afternoon. Motorists who regularly travel Little Texas Valley Road should plan to use alternate routes until the bridge reopens.
