National Model Railroad Convention Steam Excursion Coming To Summerville Thursday

 

A special steam excursion connected to the 2026 National Model Railroad Association Convention and National Train Show will make a stop in Summerville on Thursday, July 30.

The national convention is being held in Chattanooga for the first time in its 90-year history and is expected to draw more than 1,000 registered attendees from around the world. Organizers also anticipate more than 15,000 visitors for the National Train Show.

As part of the convention, the Tennessee Valley Railroad Museum will operate a chartered steam excursion to Summerville with approximately 450 passengers aboard. Special permission was granted by the Chattooga & Chickamauga Railway for the weekday trip.

The steam locomotive, pulling 12 passenger cars, is expected to arrive at the Summerville Depot between 12:30 and 1 p.m. Passengers will have an opportunity to view the Summerville Railroad Turntable and enjoy a catered luncheon in Dowdy Park.

The excursion is scheduled to depart Summerville at approximately 2:45 p.m.

Motorists should be aware that the railroad crossings on East Washington Street and East First Avenue will be closed while the train is in Summerville. Drivers should expect delays and plan to use alternate routes during the closure.

Highland Avenue to Close for Road Work Beginning Monday

The City of Summerville is advising motorists of a temporary road closure on Highland Avenue beginning Monday, July 20.

Highland Avenue will be closed from Third Street to Sixth Avenue each day from 7 a.m. until 7 p.m. through Friday, July 24, while scheduled road work is completed.

A designated detour route will be clearly marked to guide traffic around the work zone.

Drivers are encouraged to plan ahead, allow additional travel time and use caution while traveling through nearby detour areas.

The city thanked residents and motorists for their patience and cooperation while the infrastructure improvements are underway.

Mosteller Creek Bridge On Oak Hill Road To Close June 16

Chattooga County Sole Commissioner Andy Allen has announced that the Mosteller Creek Bridge on Oak Hill Road west of Lyerly will close beginning June 16 following a state inspection that found structural concerns requiring immediate attention.

Highland Avenue Road Closure Scheduled For May 18–22

A road closure is scheduled for Highland Avenue in Summerville this week due to planned infrastructure work in the area.

Highland Avenue will be closed to through traffic between East First Avenue and Sixth Avenue from Monday, May 18 through Friday, May 22. The closure will be in place daily from 7 AM until 8 PM.

Businesses and residents located within the closure area will still have access to their properties, but minor delays should be expected.

Motorists are encouraged to use Highway 27 northbound and southbound as an alternate route and follow posted detour signs around the construction zone.

The City of Summerville says Highland Avenue will be closed to through traffic beginning today due to an ongoing sewer project.

The closure will run from Monday, May 11, through Friday, May 15, between East First Avenue and Sixth Avenue. The road will be closed daily from 7 AM until 8 PM.

Residents and businesses within the closure area will still be able to access their properties, but minor delays should be expected.

Motorists are advised to use Highway 27 northbound and southbound as the primary alternate route during the closure.

Haywood Valley Road Closure In Floyd County Will Affect Chattooga County Commuters

The Floyd County Emergency Management Agency says Haywood Valley Road will be closed on Monday, May 11, for cross drain replacement work.

The closure will be in the area of 1248 Haywood Valley Road and is scheduled to last from 8 AM until 4 PM.

Floyd County Public Works will be completing the project.

Drivers traveling through the area should plan ahead and use alternate routes. The south-end detour will be New Rosedale Road, also known as Georgia Highway 156. From the north, drivers may use Dry Creek Road or Little Sand Mountain Road as detours.

Officials say the closure will affect Chattooga County commuters.
