The Town of Trion is proposing a property tax increase for 2026, despite plans to lower the town’s millage rate from last year.
According to a public notice issued by the town, officials have tentatively adopted a millage rate of 10.781 mills, a decrease from the 2025 rate of 11.900 mills. However, because of changes in property values, the proposed rate would still result in a 5.96 percent property tax increase.
The proposed millage rate is 0.286 mills higher than the rollback rate of 10.495 mills. The rollback rate is the rate that would generally generate the same amount of property tax revenue from existing properties as the previous year, excluding certain adjustments.
For a home with a fair market value of $175,000, the proposed increase would amount to approximately $19.45 in additional property taxes. For non-homesteaded property with a fair market value of $200,000, the increase would be approximately $22.88.
Residents will have three opportunities to comment on the proposed tax increase during public hearings at the Town of Trion Conference Room.
The first two hearings are scheduled for Thursday, November 5, at 10 AM and 5 PM. A third hearing will be held Thursday, November 12, at 6 PM.
The proposed millage rate has not yet received final approval.
