12-Year-Old Injured After Being Struck By Vehicle On Highway 114

A 12-year-old was taken to the hospital after being struck by a vehicle while crossing Highway 114 in Summerville Wednesday evening.

According to a Summerville Police Department crash report, the accident happened September 30 in the area of Highway 114 and East Street/Ralph Stanley Drive.

Police said a 2011 Nissan Altima, driven by Teya Sharae Hedgcoth of Summerville, was traveling south on Highway 114 when the collision occurred. The 12-year-old pedestrian was crossing the highway from east to west.

The crash report lists failure to yield as a contributing factor for the pedestrian and lists no contributing factors for the driver. The vehicle was traveling straight when the accident occurred.

The child suffered what the report classified as a suspected minor or visible injury and was transported by Atrium EMS to Floyd Hospital for treatment.

According to the report, EMS was notified at approximately 8:14 PM, arrived at the scene at 8:21 PM and arrived at the hospital shortly before 9 PM.

A witness who was crossing the highway with the child confirmed the events to the investigating officer.

The Trion Town Council has approved a significant pay increase for firefighters, a move aimed at improving compensation and helping retain fire personnel.

During the council’s August 27 meeting, Mayor Mickey McGraw made a motion to increase firefighter pay by $5 per hour. The motion was seconded and received unanimous approval from the council.

Under an ongoing cost-sharing arrangement between the town and Mount Vernon Mills, the company will pay half of the increase, or $2.50 per hour.

The increase represents an effort by town officials to improve compensation for the firefighters who provide emergency response and fire protection services to the Trion community.

The unanimous vote puts the higher hourly pay in place with the cost of the increase shared equally between the Town of Trion and Mount Vernon Mills.

AdventHealth will bring its AngioScreen heart and vascular screening program to Mount Vernon Mills in Trion this Wednesday, August 26, giving area residents an opportunity to check for warning signs of heart and vascular disease.

The screenings will be offered from 6 AM until noon at Mount Vernon Mills, 91 Fourth Street in Trion. The cost is $85 per person.

AngioScreen is a non-invasive and painless vascular health screening designed to identify potential problems before symptoms develop. The screening takes approximately 15 minutes and includes a carotid artery ultrasound to check for plaque buildup, abdominal aortic aneurysm screening, an ankle-brachial index to evaluate circulation in the legs, an ECG to assess heart rhythm, blood pressure, and a review of vascular risk factors. Participants receive an immediate review of their results from the clinical team.

The screening may be especially important for people with cardiovascular risk factors, including those 55 or older, or those with high blood pressure, high cholesterol, diabetes, obesity, a history of smoking, or a family history of heart attack or stroke.

AdventHealth says up to 50 participants can be accommodated during the screening day. Appointments can be scheduled through the link provided by AdventHealth at bit.ly/MtVernonMills. Payment options include cash, checks, credit and debit cards, as well as HSA, TaxSaver and flexible spending cards.

Trion Man Indicted on Aggravated Battery Charge

A Trion man has been indicted by a Chattooga County Grand Jury in connection with a January assault that prosecutors say left the victim without the use of his arm.

According to the indictment, Brian Hayes George, of 1184 Spring Creek Road in Trion, was formally indicted on one count of aggravated battery stemming from an incident that allegedly occurred on January 26.

The indictment alleges that George “maliciously caused bodily harm” to Matthew Rex Porter by depriving him of the use of his arm.

No additional details about the circumstances surrounding the alleged assault were included in the court filing.

Under Georgia law, aggravated battery is a felony offense. The charge carries the possibility of a prison sentence if a defendant is convicted in court.

An indictment is a formal accusation and is not a determination of guilt. All defendants are presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty in a court of law.
