Walker County 9-1-1 has informed AM1180 News that firefighters were dispatched to the Old Barwick Building on McLemore Street in Lafayette this weekend due to an industrial fire.
9-1-1 said the initial call came in at 1:48pm Saturday and when the fire department arrived the building was already fully involved.
The fire has produced run-off that could flow into the Chattooga River; this run-off may contain chemicals which could contaminate the waters of the river for several days.
You may see colors from various dyes and other products.
The EPA and EPD are monitoring the situation and keep the run-off to a minimum.
If you use the river for recreation of any type, you should limit your exposure as much as possible.
What may have started the fire has yet to be determined.
Lafayette City Manager David Hamilton says they are still trying to determine exactly what materials may have been in the building, adding that it appears there was some latex inside
The building was considered a total loss; early indications point to the blaze beginning near the left side of the structure; fortunately, no one was inside at the time the fire broke out.
The huge fire required assistance from Catoosa County, Ft. Oglethorpe and Rossville – along with a ladder company and three engine companies from Walker County.
The blaze also prevented a pedestrian train which was in Summerville that morning from making its return trip as scheduled.

A Rome man was charged with terroristic threats after he told a police officer to watch his back because he was going to get his gun after he gets out of jail, reports stated.
According to Floyd County Jail reports:
Oliver John Dukes, 42, of 1321 Hull Ave., was arrested at 906 Fifth Ave. after he refused to leave the apartment of another man after being asked multiple times. While he was being transported to the jail, he threatened an officer. When he was being searched at the jail, he was found to have a bottle of prescription medication that did not belong to him.
He is also charged with criminal trespassing and possession of stolen property.

Police estimate a man who was found dead Saturday inside his Ashland Park apartment may have died a week earlier.
Deputy Coroner Gene Proctor said the death of James Harold Kelley, 60, is being treated as suspicious, but declined to provide details.
Kelley was found with a contusion on his head, according to Rome Police Department officer Brandon Pledger.
It doesn’t appear to be a homicide, but there are still questions that need answers, Rome police detective Ryan Hutchins said Saturday afternoon.
Kelley’s body is being sent to the Georgia Bureau of Investigation’s crime lab for autopsy, Proctor added. That is common procedure in a suspicious death.
Kelley lived alone in the apartment.
A friend, Larry Clark, who found Kelley’s body, said he hadn’t heard from Kelley since Nov. 5.
He knocked on the door, but got no answer Saturday. Then, Clark opened the unlocked door and saw Kelley on the floor.
Clark said he drove by the apartment around 8 p.m. on Friday night and noticed Kelley’s third floor balcony door open, but didn’t go upstairs to see if he was home.

The Chattooga County 4-H would like to announce that the Lyerly 6th grade was the winner of the Poptab collection for the Ronald McDonald House, within the School system collection. They will be awarded a Pizza Party for their hard work and serve helping this Great Cause.
The Chattooga County Annual fundraiser Breakfast with Santa is coming up on Dec. 5th tickets are now available at the Extension/4-H Office on Commerce Street. Pictures with Santa will also be available this year. Everyone is encouraged to come out and support the Chattooga County 4-H Programs, while enjoying being waited on by Santa’s Workshop Elf’s. Tickets are $5 per person for a pancake and sausage breakfast.
The Chattooga County 4-H will be hosting a portfolio workshop on Monday, Nov. 23rd from 9 am until 2 pm. This is open to all 4-H students grade 7-12th grade. This competition is excellent in portfolio building for college and/or career opportunities.
