Cherokee County Jeff Shaver has informed media outlets that scammers are once again at work, trying to take advantage of residents in Cherokee County and in surrounding areas.

The caller in this case in posing as an employee from a government or law enforcement agency calling local residents saying they have a warrant for their arrest. Some callers are being told they did not show up for jury duty and have to pay a fine or they will be arrested while others are being told there’s an arrest warrant for them, and all they have to do to take care of it is give the caller information for payment over the phone or by mail. In some cases, the callers have had personal information about people, including their social security numbers and birth date.

Some callers have been asked for credit card numbers or payments in order to clear the warrant. The Sheriff’s Office will never call you and ask for personal information or ask for a credit card number or other financial information to clear a warrant. Scams like this are happening all across the country, and the calls are most likely originating from foreign countries.

These calls are fraudulent and have no connection to the Cherokee County Sheriff’s Office or the Cherokee County Court system.

Remember – never, ever under ANY circumstances give personal information such as your address, phone numbers, e-mail address, driver’s license number, Social Security Number, birth date, birth place, school’s name, or student ID number to callers.

                                                       WEEKLY ANIMAL CONTROL REPORT  

                                As reported by Chattooga County Animal Control

For the week of Oct.28, 2015 – Nov.02, 2015 Chattooga County Animal Control reports it investigated  20  cases,  Impounded 16 animals, stray animals/Owner Surrenders turned in were 15, returned 01 animal to their owners, adopted 01 animals , 04 animals went to rescue, euthanized 02 dogs, and 07 cats.

Animals that have been picked up or brought to Chattooga County Animal Control may be available for adoption or rescue after a three day holding period, which allows time for owner reclaims.  Chattooga County Animal Control is located off Hwy. 100  at 464 Red Oak Road.  From Summerville, turn left on Red Oak Road  before you get to Georgia Power.  The Center is located at the end of the road on the right.  The adoption fee for male dogs is $75, female dogs $85, male cats $40, and female cats $50.  This includes spay/neuter and rabies shot at the Summerville Veterinary Clinic.  Those people adopting animals who want to use a different veterinarian  must pay a $25 adoption fee and provide proof of spay/neuter within 30 days.   

Chickamauga Family Practice will soon have a new owner: The City of Chickamauga.

The city council, during its Nov. 2 meeting, was unanimous in offering $350,000 for the purchase of the physicians' office and property located on U.S. Highway 27.

The clinic was closed last month as part of bankrupt Hutcheson hospital's cost-cutting measures.

Council members agreed that the city and nearby residents benefit from having a nearby doctor's office.

The abrupt closing of Family Practice had left many of the clinic's roughly 800 patients without a primary care physician and elected officials expressed hope that the facility will soon reopen.

To staff the clinic, a three-member committee consisting of councilmen Randal Dalton and Evitte Parrish along with city manager Micheal Haney will review a tentative leasing arrangement with CHI Memorial Medical Group to operate the Chickamauga clinic.

CHI Memorial recently reached a comparable agreement with the Dade County Industrial

Development Authority following Hutcheson's sale of a similar clinic in Trenton

Details of the sale and lease will be made public as soon as the deal can close, as officials said they want their hometown clinic to reopen as quickly as possible.

Due to a mix-up in a USDA order Lafayette's "Care Mission" is in desperate need of a variety of items – including canned goods such as corn, peas, fruit, tuna and tomato sauce.

Their next USDA order will not arrive until November 11th.

Donations would be greatly appreciated.

The Care Mission is located at the corner of Patton and South Chattanooga Streets.

Stephen Rasheed Miller, 21 of Riverdale, has been sentenced to 20 years, with 10 to serve – after pleading guilty to aggravated battery and also participating in street gang activity.

Miller was also banished from Floyd County.

Reports have indicated that Miller is a professed member of the Bloods street gang, adding that Miller was a participant of a street fight on March 16th, 2014 on South Broad Street at Pennington Avenue. Prosecutors said the fight between gangs began at the Chevy Club after a disc jockey recognized one gang over the other and did a ‘shout out’ to the Money gang.

After leaving the club, the fight continued and Miller shot another man in the back.

Immediately afterwards, Miller left Floyd County, but was later arrested in Clayton County.

According to reports there was a single vehicle accident early Tuesday morning just across the state line in DeKalb County, Alabama.

According to the Alabama Law Enforcement Agency accident report, the only information at this time, is that the accident took place at around 8:15 Alabama time, on Highway 117 at mile marker one, which is near Whatley’s Curve.

The report indicated that the vehicle, a 2002 Ford, was found; however there was no driver at the scene when troopers arrived.

A very low voter turnout decided the fate of several ballot measures and municipal elections in Chattooga County on Tuesday.  Voters approved the Education Special Local Option Sales Tax by an overwhelming eighty percent, according to unofficial vote totals on Tuesday evening.  

In the City of Summerville, one incumbent councilman lost his seat, while another won by an overwhelming margin.  Councilman Dale Housch received thirty-nine percent of the vote total and was defeated by Earl Parris, Jr. who garnered sixty-one percent of the vote.  Councilman Zach Martin held onto his seat and was re-elected with seventy-two percent of the vote against challenger Charles Bennett. 

In Trion's municipal elections there were two contested raceLinda Ingle won a council seat in a three-way race, defeating the incumbent Thomas Vinn.  Incumbent councilman Don Harris won re-election to his seat  in a three way race with a little over fifty percent of the vote total. 

Voters in Lyerly approved liquor sales on Sunday, making it the only place in Chattooga County where liquor sales are legal and where alcohol can be purchased on Sunday.  The yes vote on Sunday liquor sales past by four votes, with twenty-nine voters in favor of Sunday sales and twenty-five against.  Voters also decided to keep fluoride in the city's water system with a final vote of thirty in favor and twenty-four against.

Some voters in the municipalities were not happy about having to vote at two separate places.  In Lyerly voters had to vote at Lyerly City Hall for the municipal elections and then go to Lyerly First Baptist Church to vote in the county sales tax referendum and in Summerville voters had to vote at Summerville City Hall in the municipal election and then go vote at the Chattooga Civic Center in the County Election.
