Chattooga County Arrest Files for Saturday, October 24^th

Conley Cleother Martin III – VGSCA/Possession of Marijuana more than one ounce; Willful Obstruction of Law Enforcement Officials by Use of Threats or Violence; VGSCA/Manufacture of Marijuana; Willful Obstruction or Hindrance of Firefighters by Use of Threats and/or Violence; Possession of Firearm by a Convicted Felon.

Currently there are 42 inmates lodged in the Chattooga County Jail / 24 Housed at the Polk County Jail / 31 Housed at Bartow County Jail / 2 Housed at RYDC – for a total inmate count of 99

Menlo School will be holding its first annual Glow Run this Saturday (October 24th).

Festivities will begin at 7:00pm at the park; the 5k Run will start at 8:00 and go through the town. 

The community is encouraged to come out and support the runners during the event

The accident report has finally been released for a Monday morning crash that resulted in a Summerville man being air-lifted to Erlanger Medical Center for treatment.

That accident took place just before 11:00am, at the intersection of Highway 48 and Mahan Road and involved a Ford Ranger being driven by Ollie McGraw and a Ford Cargo Van being

driven by Rome resident Fatir Pillow.

According to the Summerville News McGraw was thrown from the vehicle and as a result of the wreck received stitches to the head.

He was also treated for a broken shoulder and an array of scratches and bruises.

The Georgia State Patrol accident report indicated that McGraw had failed to yield the right of way when he turned in front of the van, which was owned by WTL, Inc. of Menlo.

A man involved in a shooting on Wax Road in April entered a guilty plea Thursday morning.
 
Eighteen year old Avon Trey Grissom, was charged with aggravated assault April 17th, and pleaded guilty in front of Judge Tami Colston.

Grissom was sentenced to 10 years with 24 to 30 months served at the Floyd County Prison Work Release Center. By operation of law, he receives credit for the six months because he was in jail, according to District Attorney Leigh Patterson. 

He was also given first offender status meaning his record will be erased if he completes his sentence, and is not allowed any contact with the victim, Charles Williams.

Grissom has a possibility of a 40 year sentence should he violate probation.   

According to prior reports Grissom was arrested and charged after he fired several shots at Williams with one of those rounds striking him in the leg.

The injury was not life threatening.

Grissom will have a restitution hearing in late November.

Hutcheson Hospital has been in Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection since last November and it's beginning to look like the Ft Oglethorpe based hospital will no longer exist, at least in its present state.

A hearing was recently held in U.S. Bankruptcy Court in Rome, to determine whether or not the hospital could sell one of its assets – Parkside Nursing Home.  The main sticking point is the fact that the hospital is currently involved in a lawsuit with Erlanger Health System, and Erlanger's attorney's are requesting that the sale be denied with Hutcheson's assets instead being auctioned. 

Attorneys for those owned money, other than Erlanger have expressed support for the sale, saying that the facility operates on at least a break-even basis, and that New Beginnings has offered $7 million for the operation.

At this point, Hutcheson has effectively shut down with all of its clinics already being closed and only the ER service still open; currently there are only a dozen or so patients remaining

On October 30th in Atlanta a hearing will be conducted regarding the proposed auction and the adversarial filings of attorneys for either side.

The Georgia DOT says it is delaying the bids for $123 million worth of projects in December because Congress has yet to pass the Transportation Funding Bill.

The 34 projects were for improvements to roads and bridges across Georgia.

The problem has been going on for a while. Congress has agreed to a number of short term extensions, but no final bill has been approved.

The clock runs out on the latest extension next Thursday.

The Rome Historic Preservation Commission recently approved a request for renovation of the building at 1 Broad Street. 

The location, a former home to Gulf Gas, as well as numerous restaurants, will soon be the home of a beer garden called the River Dog Outpost.

This comes after the Rome Alcohol Control Commission approved a beer and wine pouring license.

Owners Mike and Connie Sams said the plan is to open for business in November – and they plan to build a six foot privacy fence separating the beer garden from the Bridgepoint Plaza, adding that they will include an open view of the river in the fence.

A Chattooga County Sheriff's Office Deputy was recently dispatched to the local Walmart – in response to a report of possible theft.

Upon arrival, the deputy spoke with the complainant who said she'd been looking at jackets in the men's section; she then chose a jacket and picked up the items she had with her, then went to put a coffee maker back on the shelf.

After putting the coffee maker back she realized she didn't have her purse and quickly went back to the men's section but was unable to locate the purse. 

She told the deputy she then went to the Customer Service desk, to see if the item had been turned in, with no luck; that's when law enforcement was contacted; the deputy was able to view surveillance footage showing the woman in the men's section, where she tried on one of the jackets, then picked up her items and walked away.

The footage also shows her returning a few moments later – no one else entered the area in the time that she was gone; the video failed to clearly show whether she left the purse there or if she had it when she left the area.

A further search of the area also failed to turn up the purse.
