Roper Corp. is holding another job fair Saturday in LaFayette, Ga., to fill a number of full-time first and second shift production operator positions.

Dot Troyer, a human resource specialist for the cooking appliance manufacturer said the company needs to fill about 80 new positions brought on by increasing production volumes as well as more than 100 positions resulting from normal attrition over the past few months. Roper had a similar job fair last month during the week but scheduled to have a Saturday event this week to open up more applications from those wanting to work at Roper who are presently employed elsewhere.

The company will be taking applications at the Georgia Department of Labor office in LaFayette 200 West Villanow St. from 9 a.m. until noon. She said the Saturday job fair should be more convenient for job seekers who cannot attend a weekday event because they already have a job

Applicants must be at least 18 years old and will need to show proof of a high school diploma or GED when they apply. They will also need to show a valid driver's license or state-issued ID and a non-laminated Social Security Card.

Beech-Nut Nutrition recalls baby food after glass found in jar

Beech-Nut Nutrition announced a recall of approximately 1,920 pounds of baby food products after a consumer found a small piece of glass in one of the products.

The recall, announced Tuesday on the website of the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA), involves 4-oz. glass jars containing “Stage 2 Beech-Nut CLASSICS sweet potato & chicken” that were produced on Dec. 12, 2014. The USDA said the baby food products were shipped to retail locations nationwide. 
Beech Nut, based in Amsterdam, New York, also received a report of an oral injury associated with the consumption of the now-recalled products, according to the USDA.

The recalled product contains the establishment number “P-68A” inside the USDA mark of inspection and includes product numbers “12395750815” through “12395750821”.

Consumers with questions about the recall can contact the Beech-Nut Consumer Hotline at (866) 674-4446.

Beech-Nut says on its website that it initiated the voluntary recall after receiving a single report of a small glass piece found in a jar of its baby food. The company says consumers can return a recalled product to the store where it was purchased for a full refund or exchange.

Authorities in Dade County worked a serious accident on Burkhalter Gap Road at Creek Road this morning.   The accident happened at about 7:30 a.m. during a rainy morning rush hour.  
The Georgia State Patrol confirms to News Channel 9 that the victims in the crash are teenagers who were on their way to school.  A witness told investigators the car didn't appear to be speeding when it left the roadway and went about 15 feet down an embankment, and hit a power pole and tree. 
The driver was killed. The passenger is now recovering at Erlanger Hospital after being thrown from the vehicle and having it roll on top of him.

UPDATE: The Dade County Sheriff's Department has identified the driver killed as Logan Dotson. The surviving passenger is Blake Sharp.

It is now time to report on the 2014 Farm Gate values for your county. The process continues to be streamline by the Georgia Dept of Ag.   If you have not yet completed your Farm Gate Survey please stop by the Chattooga County Extension Office and complete yours today so that your information can be added to our County values.  The deadline for reporting your Farm Gate Value to Ms. Rebecca Thomas at the Chattooga County Extension office is May 13^th.  This Value is a true reflection of our County’s agricultural production and economic impact for the State Reports and Ms. Rebecca Thomas, CEC asks that everyone that has any production in agriculture in the county to please stop by the office and complete this survey before the deadline. 

The Farm Service Agency is reporting the below values for Chattooga County at this point: 

 Corn- 1556.23; Cotton Upland-316.54; Crops – 75.6; Home Garden-2.09; Grass – 2842.47; Millet- 2.23; Mixed Forage -6812.74;  Soybean – 1543.15; Trees and Timber- 75.38; Wheat- 334.38; Wildlife food plot- 4.01;  With a grand total sum of report acres for Chattooga County- 13564.82.

Chattooga county timber values reported from the GA Department of Revenue is $829,009.

Town of Trion Mayor Larry Stansell would like to announce a special called meeting on Wednesday, April 15^th at 6pm in the Town Hall Conference room.  The purpose of the meeting is Executive Session – Personnel.

Two Summerville Middle School FFA students will be advancing for State Judging for their record books.  Congratulations to Jorja Cooper for her record book in Livestock Care with her dairy heifer, and Cam Anderson for his horticulture record book for the school greenhouse work.   They both will be recognized next week at the Georgia State FFA convention as they advance for the state judging!

The annual Spring Plant Sale at Georgia Northwestern Technical College (GNTC) will take place on April 17-18 at Horticulture greenhouse located on Woodlee Hill, (across from GNTC’s Floyd County Campus).

The sale is hosted by GNTC’s Horticulture program. Sale hours are noon to 6 p.m. on Friday, April 17, and 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Saturday, April 18.  Items being sold include shrubs, ferns, woody plants, annuals, perennials, sun plants, and shade plants. There also will be a great selection of vegetable plants, you will have at least 25 varieties of tomatoes to choose from and almost every pepper you can imagine; including the ghost pepper and California reaper pepper.

  All proceeds from the plant sale will benefit the Horticulture program at GNTC.

 Shannen Ferry, director of GNTC’s Horticulture program “stated that this year’s key person in organizing the Annual Plant sale is Horticulture student Alice Towe who was the 2015 GOAL winner at GNTC.
