Mr. Red Donovan Hurtt Obit (M)

Mr. Red Donovan Hurtt, age 67, of Trion, GA, died Thursday, March 26, 2015, at Redmond Regional Medical Center.
 
Mr. Hurtt was born October 26, 1947, in LaFayette, GA, son of the late Oscar and Mabel Rogers Hurtt.  He was a veteran of the United States Marine Corps where he served as a Corporal during the Vietnam War.  He was the recipient of the Purple Heart Medal, the National Defense Service Medal, the Vietnam Service Medal, The Vietnam Campaign Medal, and the Rifle Sharpshooter Badge.  Mr. Hurtt was a member of the Freedom Seekers Motorcycle Club, the Masons, and worked with the Boy Scouts of America. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, LaVonda Croy Hurtt.
 
Mr. Hurtt is survived by his daughters and son-in-law, Tamberly Millican, Tina Gray, and Tonya Hurtt Gilbride and Michael Gilbride; a sister, Yvonne Horner; grandchildren, Lee Millican, Ali Millican, Lauren Hale, Amanda Gray, Hayley Gray, Sydney Gilbride, Emily Gilbride, and Chance Gilbride; great-grandchildren, Madalyn Hale, Wyatt Tucker, Paxton Donovan Gray, and Jack Donovan Gilbride.
 
Funeral services for Mr. Hurtt will be held at 2:00 P.M. Sunday, March 29, 2015, from the Mason Funeral Home Chapel with Big Daddy Greg Dean officiating.  Interment will follow in the Bryan Cemetery at 3:33 P.M.  Active pallbearers will be Butch, Breeze, Door, Gordon, SGT West, Poppa Ray, and Jim Becker.  Honorary pallbearers will be the members of the Freedom Seekers Motorcycle Club.
 
Mr. Hurtt will be in state at Mason Funeral Home and the family will receive friends from 11:33 A.M. until 1:33 P.M. Sunday, March 29, 2015.  He will also be in state at the Freedom Seekers Motorcycle Club Northwest Georgia Clubhouse from 6:00 until 9:00 P.M. Saturday, March 28, 2015.

Ms. Brenda Joyce Ashworth Obit (M)

Ms. Brenda Joyce Ashworth, age 68, of Calhoun, GA died Wednesday, March
18, 2015.
 
Ms. Ashworth was born December 1, 1946 in Trion, GA, the daughter of the late
Charlie Smith and Viola Edwards Smith.  She was retired from Roper Corporation.
 
Mrs. Ashworth is survived by her children, Tammy Smith, Barry Ashworth,
Shane Ashworth, and Dewey Ashworth; and 7 Grandchildren .
 
Funeral services will be held at 11:00 a. m. Saturday, March 21, 2015 at Mason
Funeral Home Chapel.  Burial will follow in West Hill Cemetery. Pallbearers will be Shane Ashworth, Billy Medley, Randy Justice, Jesse Smith, and Dewey Ashworth. 
 
Ms. Ashworth will be in state at Mason Funeral Home and the family will receive
friends from 6:00 until 8:00 p. m. Friday, March 20, 2015.

Mrs. Nellie Dooley Marks Obit (M)

Mrs. Nellie Dooley Marks, age 86, of Summerville, GA, died Thursday, March 19, 2015, at the Oakview Nursing and Rehabilitation Center.
 
Mrs. Marks was born March 30, 1928, in Chattooga County, GA, daughter of the late Floyd and Lily Mae Whisenut Dooley.  She was a member of the Summerville First Presbyterian Church and was a retired librarian with the Summerville Elementary School. 
 
Mrs. Marks is survived by her husband of 68 years, Stuart Marks; a son, Will Marks; a sister, Louise Norton; and grandchildren, Ethan Hutchins, Tripp Marks, and Hannah Marks.
 
Funeral services for Mrs. Marks will be held at 1:00 P.M. Saturday, March 21, 2015, from the Mason Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Greg King and Rev. Kenneth Norton officiating.  Interment will follow in the Summerville Cemetery.  Pallbearers will be nephews.
 
Mrs. Marks will be in state at Mason Funeral Home and the family will receive friends from 6:00 until 8:00 P.M. Friday, March 20, 2015.

Final Vote on Liquor in Chattooga County

Liquor by the drink is defeated in Chattooga County. Voters said no to restaurants selling liquor by the drink with 563 voting "no" and 452 voting "yes".

 

Mr. James Wesley Simmons Obit (M)

Mr. James Wesley Simmons, age 73, of Summerville, GA, passed away Friday March 13, 2015, in Redmond Regional Medical Center.
Mr. Simmons was born August 15, 1941, in Trion, GA, the son of the late James Thomas and Julia Ethel Stansell Simmons.  He was retired from Mohawk Carpet Mills, and preceded in death by his 1st wife, Shirell T. Simmons, and grandson, William J. Simmons.
 
Survivors include his wife, Dorothy Simmons to  whom he was married for 31 years, children, Jody Simmons, Charles & Michelle Simmons, Raymond & Annette Jones, Annie Simmons, Jamie & Ralph Eskew, Cindy & David Westbrooks, Angel & Danny Wilcox, sisters, Evelyn Sensenbaugh, Joyce Hines, Ann Johnson, brothers, Carlton Simmons, Robert Simmons, 11 grandchildren, 9 great-grandchildren.

Mr. Jerry Houston Miller Obit (C)

Mr. Jerry Houston Miller, age 68, of Halls Valley Drive, Trion, Georgia, passed away Sunday, March 01, 2015 at his residence following an extended illness.

Mr. Miller was born in Niles, Michigan on June 27, 1946, son of the late Houston Lewis Miller and Pearl Ethel Johnson Miller. He was a member and head elder of the Seventh Day Adventist Church, and prior to retirement, was employed with Lester Inc., and was a nursing tech at Floyd Medical Center. Mr. Miller was a veteran of the Vietnam War, serving in the United States Army, and was preceded in death by his sister, Karen Levinson.

Mr. Miller is survived by his wife, Violet G. Miller of Trion; sons and daughters-in-law, Matthew Scott and Melissa Miller of Noblesville, Indiana and Nicholas Gerald and Christine Miller of Berea, Kentucky; eight grandchildren, and nieces and nephews.

Memorial Services for Mr. Miller will be held Saturday, March 14, 2015 at 4:00 P.M. in the Seventh-Day Adventist Church, 396 Bellah Avenue, Summerville, Georgia, with Pastor Edward Skoretz officiating. Interment will be held privately at a later date.

Head Start and Early Head Start is an income-based program that serves pregnant moms and children up to 5 years old. Chattooga Head Start has qualified teaching staff and parent involvement activities. Special consideration is given to children who are disabled or homeless.

Mr. Michael Sean Maxwell, age 51, of Summerville, GA, died Saturday, February 28, 2015, at Redmond Regional Medical Center.
 
Mr. Maxwell was born January 30, 1964, in Pennington Gap, VA, son of Mary Helen Walker Maxwell and the late Charles Jerry Maxwell.  He was employed in computer sales.
 
Mr. Maxwell is survived by his mother, Mary Helen Walker Maxwell; sister and brother-in-law, Alissa and Buddy Porter; and several cousins.
 
Funeral services for Mr. Maxwell will be held at 1:00 P.M. Wednesday, March 4, 2015, from the Mason Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. David VanBrugge officiating.  Interment will follow in the Greenhills Memory Gardens.

Miss Trion Pageant to be Held This Month

The Miss Trion Pageant will be held on March 21st, 2015, at 5:00 p.m. in the Trion High School Gymnasium. There will be a rehearsal for Miss Trion Pageant contestants on March 20th, at 6:30 p.m. in the Trion High School Gymnasium. Some changes will be made this year for larger groups of contestants so each contestant is encouraged to be at this rehearsal.
