The Town of Trion will hold a Public Hearing at 4:00 pm at the Town Hall Conference Room on Monday, June 9, 2014.

Mayor Larry Stansell and Council Members will be discussing with the public about the Simmons Street Sidewalk Project. 

This past Sunday, June 1st, a domestic dispute brought officers to South Walnut Street. A little girl was outside her home when officers arrived and said that her father was attacking her mother and would not stop. Before officers could go inside, the father came out of the door. Officers quickly detained the male, later identified as Jose Corona. One officer took Mr. Corona to the patrol car while the other questioned the mother of the little girl. The mother was sitting in the home, but could not speak English to tell officers what had happened. Her daughter translated for her and officers learned that the daughter had seen Mr. Corona harming her mother, "trying to slam her down." The daughter then attempted to pull Mr. Corona off of her mother, but when she could not, she called 911. The mother showed officers where her neck had turned red from Mr. Corona grabbing her. Mr. Corona was taken to the Chattooga County Jail.

On May 31st, Chattooga County officers were called to the Trion Walmart. One Loss Prevention Associate told the officers that two males and two females were seen entering through the grocery entrance, placing approximately eighty dollars worth of merchandise in a shopping cart, and exiting through the grocery doors. 

One officer identified the male pushing the cart as Kendrell Shane Evans. Chattooga County officers were able to find Mr. Evans' car and  quickly traveled to the residence where he and his car were located. Mr. Evans was inside the residence, as well as one of the females that accompanied him in Walmart. Both Mr. Evans and the woman retrieved nearly all of the items they took from Walmart, excluding some food items, and brought them to the officers. Mr. Evans told officers that he was the only one that took anything from the store and the only person responsible. The items were returned to Walmart and Mr. Evans was taken to the Chattooga County Jail.

Officers were called to Mill Village Road on Friday, May 30th. A woman told officers that her former boyfriend had come to her house and took a Samsung tablet that he had given to her as a gift on an earlier date. The woman expressed fear for her safety because she thought he might come back to the home and harm her. The officers told the woman they would have extra patrol around the area and informed her of the steps necessary to file a restraining order.

A man living off of Taliaferro Springs Road called officers on Friday, May 30th after discovering that his vehicle had been damaged. The man had left his home and when he returned, he discovered that his driver-side window was broken out. He also found an onion in the exhaust pipe of his vehicle. The vandal's identity is a mystery to the man and officers.

Around 1:00 in the afternoon on May 28th, one Chattooga County officer went into Lucky's Supermarket located in Menlo. The officer was quickly directed towards a rambunctious man who was soon identified as Butch Parker. Mr. Parker had slurred speech and appeared intoxicated. Mr. Parker had blue jeans and work boots on, but no shirt on in the Supermarket. Mr. Parker joked with the officer, pointing to another man in the store and saying "I want you to shoot him in the foot."

Mr. Parker was asked to step outside and asked how much he had to drink. He replied "too much," and told the officer he had been drinking all day. 

The Chattooga County officer wished to take Mr. Parker to the Sheriff's Office to test his blood alcohol levels to ensure that Mr. Parker did not need medical attention, but when the officer attempted to persuade Mr. Parker to accompany him, he became upset and began to curse. After a short struggle, Mr. Parker was secured with hand restraints and taken to the Chattooga County Jail and charged with public drunkenness. 

At Tuesday night’s Summerville City Council meeting, a local resident, Mr. Dicky Fowler, brought forward a pressing issue in the meeting’s opening comments. Earlier that day, Mr. Fowler had attempted to reach the City Annex to vote, however, the condition of the sidewalks in and around the Annex building were in such a dilapidated state that he found it nearly impossible to find an entrance to the Annex. Mr. Fowler is confined to a wheelchair, and because of that, he has had what he describes as a “rude awakening” when it comes to traveling around the county. Earlier in the year, Mr. Fowler’s wheelchair had gotten stuck in the railroad tracks in Summerville and more than 15 minutes had passed before anyone realized he needed assistance. During Tuesday’s incident, Mr. Fowler’s wheelchair got caught in a part of the sidewalk that caused his wheelchair to be slung out into the road. Thankfully, no cars were going down that road. However, Mr. Fowler did see it about time to bring to the attention of City Manager Russell Thompson and the City Council that disabled people can barely access several government buildings in Summerville, let alone, traverse the county safely. Mr. Fowler remarked that the incident scared him and that he would gladly even donate his chair to prove that mobility in Chattooga County is in critical condition.

During Tuesday’s Summerville City Council Meeting, the Council addressed an authorization to change order #3 for the paving of Phase I of the Scoggins and Ramey Streets CDBG project. Earlier in the year, there was a discrepancy with the amount of gravel to be used to pave over the streets and as a result the total contract overage is $71,996.78. $58,608 is for paving and the remaining $13,387.93 is what the City spent over in tile, gravel, and service connections. City staff met with the contractors to come to an agreeable tonnage on the paving. The Council had already appropriated $50,000 to the project, and voted unanimously to appropriate the additional $21,996.78. In addition to that, the Council named Allen Smith Consulting as the grant administrator for Phase II of the Scoggins and Ramey CDBG Project. The council also named an engineer for Phase II chose Tom Sloope of Carter & Sloope, Inc. as engineer in comparison with two other company engineer, due to his criterion score and the fact that Carter & Sloope, Inc is a much larger company.

The Town of Trion will have their regular Workshop / Council Meeting in the Town Hall Conference Room, Thursday, May 22, 2014. The Workshop will begin at 6:00p.m.and the Regular Meeting will follow shortly after.
