The cheapest gas prices in months have been enjoyed by Northwest Georgia drivers in recent weeks, but as quickly as prices fell, they have once again started to rise.
AAA-South reports a weekly increase of three cents in the state and two cents nationwide. Spokeswoman Jessica Brady says the week was a mixed bag of economic news as jobless claims rose less than expected but the GDP was more sluggish than forecast for the first quarter in the U.S. Brady says the week ahead will be volatile in the marketplace which should actually provide stability at the gas pump.
The cheapest fuel in the Northwest Georgia region is slightly more expensive this week than it was seven days ago, but is still a better value than can found many places in the Peach State. Dalton has the cheapest regular unleaded gas at $3.20 per gallon. Calhoun at $3.27 and Cartersville at $3.29 are also low, while Rockmart, Rome, Summerville and Cedartown are between $3.31 and $3.35 per gallon.
Over the course of last week the cost of crude oil rose about $5 a barrel. The U.S. average gas price is now $3.50 per gallon, while Georgia’s is significantly lower at $3.37.
A man shot himself during a domestic argument Monday afternoon just as police arrived on the scene.
Around 2pm, Rome City Police reports say officers arrived at the MAPCO Gas Station on U.S. 411 only to find a man pointing a pistol at himself. The man was reportedly arguing with a woman and, before officers could intervene, he pulled the trigger.
The victim was taken to by EMS to Floyd Medical Center, where his condition remains unknown.
The victim has been identified by Rome Police reports as Richard Eugene Peace, age 43 of Kingston.
The recent service station raids in Rockmart are being heralded as one of the state’s largest Synthetic Marijuana busts ever; but, new fears have emerged from the Thursday bust that Northwest Georgia and North Eastern Alabama may be a major producer of certain brands of the drug known by its street name as Spice.
Lance Dyer, head of the Dakota Dyer Foundation, says a large amount of two relatively new brands of synthetic pot were uncovered in the raids. This, along with other evidence, has led Dyer and authorities to believe the spices known as Devil’s Eye and Satan are locally manufactured.
“We’re only seeing it in Northwest Georgia and Northeastern Alabama. It contains a chemical called URL 11, which seems to be an extremely nasty synthetic poison,” Dyer says. “Every bit of it points to that this is being manufactured and distributed locally. The first arrest we found out about was in Chattooga County back in February. It’s shown up in Polk, Bartow and Floyd Counties. Now, it’s been reported in Douglas County, Carroll County and Haralson County, and also in Calhoun County in Alabama.”
It was a tip to Dyer's Bremen organization that played a significant role in the Polk County drug raids last Thursday. The Dakota Dyer Foundation combats synthetic marijuana use all across Georgia, which fueled a two-month investigation into the two Rockmart convenience stores.
The foundation is named for Dye's son after his death at age 14. The teenager tried synthetic marijuana that caused a psychosis, which reportedly caused him to take his own life.
The foundation works to educate the young and old on the nightmarish affects of synthetic pot, while also working simultaneously with law enforcement to get the drug off the streets.

A Trion man reported to the Chattooga County Sheriff's Department last week that his dog may have been shot by a neighbor.
Benjamin Johnson, of a Diamond Lane, Trion, address, called 911 around 2 a.m. April 26 to report that his dog may have been shot. Johnson said he discovered the dog at about 12:30 a.m. bleeding from his chest. He said he wasn't positive but it appeared the dog had been shot with some type of small pellet. He said someone had told him that his neighbors had been shooting guns the same day. Deputies were unable to make contact with the neighbors that allegedly were shooting guns.
The National Day of Prayer is Thursday, May 2. The event will be recognized locally at 6 p.m. that day at the Chattooga Civic Center.
The event will include prayers for our nation. Pastor Francois Carr, from South Africa of Hearts Cry Ministry, will be the featured speaker at the civic center.

An Alabama woman was taken to a hospital in Floyd County after being injured by her own car.
The woman's Kia SUV reportedly ran out of gas on highway 100 in Holland and a motorist, that was driving by, stopped to help push the SUV out of the roadway. As the Kia was being pushed the woman somehow fell out of the vehicle. At that point the car was heading down a small ditch area and the woman's legs went underneath the car.
There is no word on the woman's condition.
According to the Atlanta Journal-Constitution, a major flooring company is looking to build a plant in northwest Georgia, resulting in an estimated 2,000 new jobs. The report said that while the deal is still pending, an announcement could be confirmed within two weeks. The name of the company was kept quiet, but sources did say that it was not Mohawk or Shaw Industries.
The AJC did say that, former Shaw Industries head Bob Shaw, founded Engineered Floors, and is looking to expand his business.
Engineered Floors has plants currently in Dalton and Calhoun.
Gov. Nathan Deal even hinted at a major job announcement on Monday, but would not comment any further.
This news comes following huge moves in the carpet businesses over the past six months. Mohawk acquired three companies: Pergo, the laminate flooring maker; Spano Invest NV, a Belgian maker of chip and melamine board and tile maker Marazzi Group.
