Deal Expects Bill Allowing Guns In Schools To Pass

Georgia Gov. Nathan Deal says he predicts a bill allowing trained administrators to carry guns in schools will pass the state Legislature.

Morris News Service reports Gov. Deal made the comment during the annual Georgia Chamber of Commerce Eggs and Issues breakfast Wednesday morning.

Deal says a bill proposed by Republican Rep. Paul Battles, of Cartersville, will likely gain support in the General Assembly. The bill calls for local school boards to decide whether trained administrators should be allowed to carry guns in schools.

Aside from the possibility of trained administrators being allowed to carry guns, Deal says lawmakers need to more closely monitor the mental health records of people seeking gun permits. The governor says he may offer legislation to bolster the state's work in that area.

Deal Makes Historic Appointment To State Court

Fayette County State Court Judge Carla Wong McMillian has become the first Asian-American chosen to serve on the state's appellate court.

The Atlanta Journal-Constitution ( ) reports Gov. Nathan Deal appointed 39-year-old McMillian to the court Wednesday. McMillian is 1 of 4 judges the governor has appointed to the 12-judge panel.

McMillian's grandparents are from China and Hong Kong. The judge attended Duke University for undergraduate studies and went on to study law at the University of Georgia.

McMillian, of Tyrone, is filling a seat former Judge Harris Adams left vacant when he retired.

Stray Dog Bites Child

Chattooga County Sheriff's Deputies on January 9 were dispatched to a Mountain View Road residence in reference to a stray dog biting a child. According to the report, officers arrived just before 2 p.m. and were told by Ronnie Beene, that his 10-year-ol son had been bitten by a brown, stray dog. The bite was on the lower, right leg, above the ankle. According to the deputy, the skin was not broken. Animal control was notified and picked up two brown dogs that were believed to belong at a residence down the street..

Auto Rammed, DUI Arrest

A Chattooga County man was charged with driving under the influence of alcohol after reportedly ramming another person's vehicle on January 12. According to the report filed by Chattooga County Sheriff's Deputy Caine Railey, the incident occurred at about 10:30 p.m. January 12. The report contains little information and just states that Railey was dispatched to Dry reek Road in reference to a subject ramming another subject's vehicle. Arrested was 47-year-old Samuel Zack Pucket of Dry Creek Road.

Money Taken From Bank Account

A Haywood Valley woman on January 14 reported that someone has been taking money from her bank account without her permission. According to the report, $29.93 was taken out on three occasions for a total of $89.85. She said she had notified United Community Bank and was told the name of the company withdrawing the funds. She said she contacted the company. The report does not incidate if the matter was resolved. Firearms Charge Stems From Trespassing Incident

A Chattooga County man was arrested on charges of  criminal trespass, discharging a firearm  while under the Influence of Alcohol, and simple assault after an incident with a neighbor on January 13. According to the report, Paula Carter said it all started when her neighbor, Oliver Chase Carter  was on her property with a four wheeler and was tearing up the yard.  Paula Carter said she started to video him tearing her yard up, with her camera. She said when Oliver  Carter saw her filming him, he rode his four wheeler over to where she was,  threatened her life and began "hollering" for someone to "get him his gun." She said when Oliver Carter got his gun he fired one shot in the air. Three deputies walked to Oliver Carter's Burton Road home,  According to the report, Oliver Carter repeatedly denied having a gun at his house. Later when alone with one deputy, Oliver Carter reportedly confessed that he did have a gun and his mother had hidden it. Officers recovered a .22 caliber loaded with five bullets and one spent casing. Oliver Carter was arrested and transported to the Chattooga County Jail.

Trion Man Charged With Obstruction

A Chattooga County man was charged with obstruction of a law enforcement officer on January 11. According to the report filed by Deputy John Chandler, the events of the evening began when a couple was arguing at McDonald's. The woman appeared calm and was cooperative though still verbally aggravated, according to the report. The man, 28 year old Christopher Thomas Warren, of Selma Drive, Trion, did admit to drinking an alcoholic beverage prior to the incident. Both were told to leave and not return. The woman left in her vehicle, but Warren said he didn't have a ride home. Deputy Chandler gave Warren a ride home, but when they arrived Warren said he couldn't stay there. Chandler then reportedly told Warren that he couldn't take him anywhere else. It was at that point that Warren reportedly became "boisterous" while in the rear of the patrol car, according to the report.  The report indicates that Chandler stopped the patrol car at this time and advised Warren he was under arrest. While putting Warren in restraints he resisted significantly and would not return to the back of the police car without Chandler's assistance. While being transported to the Chattooga County Jail, Warren reportedly told Deputy Chandler that he "would harass" him "every time he came in contact" with him. And made several  racial slurs against the deputy, who is African American.  He further told Chandler that he was only being taken to jail because a Trion officer told him to do so and he referred to a Trion Police Department officer as a "cracker."

Gadsden Man Has Issues With Menlo Gunsmith

A Gadsden man reported to the Chattooga County Sheriff's Department on January 12, that he was having issues with a gunsmith company in Menlo. According to the report, Ashley Thomas Colvin said he had taken his gun to the gunsmith back in March 2012 to havve the scope painted green. He said he has tried to contact the company about the scope several times and the company does not return his calls and will not come to the door. The value of the scope is estimated at $590, according to the report. Colvin was advised of the Magistrate Court procedures concerning the incident.
