A Mahan Road resident reported Saturday that their home was burglarized. Dani Grinis told Chattooga County Sheriff's deputies that when she arrived home Saturday night the front door knob to the residence was broken. She said she found her prescription hydrocodone was missing , as well as her father's — a total of 160 pills in all. While the home reportedly contained several expensive electronic items, the only thing taken was the prescription drugs
A Walker County Church has finished rebuilding after an arson in July 2011. Garrett's Chapel Baptist Church suffered nearly $400,000 in damage and the arsonist was never caught. The congregation rebuilt the church and on Sunday a dedication service was held.
Dan Roper, a respected Georgia historian, will present the final Rome – Floyd Civil War Symposium of 2012 on Thursday, November 15.
The Greater Rome Convention & Visitors Bureau has partnered with the Rome- Floyd County Library since 2011 to bring various speakers on unique Civil War Heritage topics. The series celebrates Civil War heritage during the Sesquicentennial, or 150th anniversary, of the War Between the States, which will continue through 2015.
Roper is the publisher and editor of Georgia Backroads, a seasonal magazine focused on the unique heritage and culture found throughout Georgia. He has also published several books and over 80 articles on Georgia history and travel.
Roper will present a lecture titled "Shades of Gray: Race Relations in Rome during the Civil War and Reconstruction."
According to Roper, “In 1872 in Floyd County, a black man entered a white church pastored by a veteran of the Confederate army. What happened next reveals the dramatic and complex history of the white and black communities in Rome during the era of the Civil War, Reconstruction and the Ku Klux Klan. This story offers intrigue and surprise and gives proof to the old adage, ‘truth is stranger than fiction.’”
The event is free and open to the public. The one hour symposium will be held at 6:30pm in the Coosa Room of the Rome – Floyd County Library.

A Lyerly man died Saturday in a Rome hospital after reciving multiple injuries in a wreck Friday morning in Cherokee County, Alabama.According to the Alabama State Troopers: 22-year-old Christopher Lee Cody Allen, of Lyerly, lost control of his 1996 Dodge pick-up truck on Cherokee County Road 41 near the County Road 91 intersection , north of Gaylesville, Friday morning around 5:15 and was ejected from the vehicle. Efforts to airlift Allen from the scene were thwarted by heavy fog so he was transported by ambulance to a Rome hospital where he succumbed to his injuries Saturday.

PSC Metals, Inc., in Rome reportedly has closed it's doors. According to the Coosa Valley News, corporate officials came to Rome on Wednesday and told employees that the business on Shorter Industrial Blvd. in west Rome was closing. PSC Metals is one of North Americ'as permier ferrous and non-ferous scrap processors. The Rome location is one of 49 facilities.
The Harbin Tony E. Warren Clinic Cancer Center will be sponsoring its Christmas Wreath Holiday Fundraiser to benefit the non-profit organization, Cancer Navigators, again this year. Now that Georgia voters have approved a constitutional amendment affirming the state's authority to create special public schools, attention is shifting to putting the new policy in action.
Gov. Nathan Deal, House Speaker David Ralston and Lt. Gov. Casey Cagle say their offices are already vetting potential nominees for a new charter school commission. Those three will submit names to the state Board of Education, which will choose the seven members.
The selection process will not begin officially until Jan. 1, when the law goes into effect.
The new commission will have the authority to grant charters for special state schools. Local school boards will still consider applications for local charter schools, though the commission can override them.
