An Armuchee woman died Tuesday from injuries she sustained in a three-vehicle accident on Rome's new bypass near Grizzard Park, closing traffic in the westbound lanes just after 3 p.m. Brooke Michelle Anthony, of a Turkey Mountain Armuchee address, was pronounced dead at Floyd Medical Center at about 5:30 p.m. She died of multiple, massive traumas and her body is being taken to the state crime lab for an autopsy. Two other drivers were also critically injured, according to police. The driver of a red Ford Explorer was heading West on the bypass in the outside lane while Anthony, in a green Kia Soul, was next to her in the inside lane. It was then that the driver of a white GMC cargo van crossed the median into oncoming traffic. The GMC van reportedly launched into the air and landed on top of the Kia and while the van was still midair, the Explorer drove up under the van. The van then landed upside down in the ditch and the Kia on it's driver's side, with the Explorer still upright facing the ditch. The woman in the Explorer had a four-year-old in the car, but the child made it out unscathed.
Election Day brought rain-slicked roads led to a fatal accident in the Lafayette on Election Day. The Georgia State patrol reports that 47-year-old Harry Kellett of Lafayette was killed in wreck in Noble, just North of Reeds Road. . His wife also was critically injured and was transported to the hospital by LifeForce. Sheriff Steve Wilson said the head-on accident happened as a driver exited Dixie Collision, Southbound, onto Highway 27. The State Patrol said the driver lost control, over-corrected, and veered into the Northbound lane, hitting the Kellett's vehicle. The young male driver of the second vehicle also was taken to Erlanger by ambulance.
Early Wednesday morning Chattooga County deputies responded to a 911 call from an Ellenburg Subdivision Road residence to find one of the complainants in the doorway unloading a weapon. According to the report, someone had been trying to entering a vehicle parked at the residence just after 5 a.m. Officers reportedly found a white male, later identified as Stryder Fain Maddox staggering around about 10 yards from the carport of the home. Maddox was wearing sweat pants, tennis shoes and no shirt, and was reportedly swaying back and forth unsteady on his feet, with his speech severely slurred. According to the report, he appeared to be under the influence of alcohol or other unknown substance. After being told to get on the ground several times, he complied and was then put in to the back of a patrol car. The report say that statements from the complainants indicate that Maddox entered the vehicle, a 2006 Ford Crown Victoria, asked for the keys several times, and then told the complainants he was going to take the car and drive it. According to the report, Maddox was arrested and charged with criminal attempt.
Walmart's Loss Prevention Specialist has reported to the Chattooga County Sheriff's Department that over the past two weeks he has obtained video of an employee taking more than $130 worth of merchandise from the store. Johnnie Smith told deputies that the woman has admitted to him that she has taken between $700 and $800 in merchandise from the store since she began working there in March. According to Ken Anderson with the Chattooga County Sheriff's Department, a warrant has been issued for the woman's arrest.
Repairing Damage done by someone breaking into a vacant house Monday will cost the home owner more than to the items stolen from the residence, according to the police report. A Summerville man reported a burglary at a Highway 27 home he owns on Monday. According to the report, the home was vacant and in the process of being remodeled. It was reported that someone made forced entry through a back door and a kitchen door damaging both. Also the locks were broken off both doors. The home was vacant so the only items stolen were things being used in the remodeling work. Those items include paint and a caulking gun valued at about $28. An approximate estimate to replace the damaged doors is listed at $400 on the report.
A Lyerly man reported that he was working at another Lyerly residence and returned after taking a lunch break to find that his skill saw was missing. The man did give Chattooga County Sheriff's Deputies the name of a suspect. The De Walt Skill saw is valued at $200, according to the report.
A man still on probationary status with the Trion Volunteer Fire Department has been relieved of his duties after his arrest on various sex-related charges. James Dillon Hayes of Ridgeland Road, Trion, was arrested Wednesday charged with aggravated child molestion, child molestation, statutory rape and sexual battery, according to Caroline Cobb, investigator with the Chattooga County Sheriff's Department. Cobb said, 20-year-old Hayes was arrested at Chattooga High School after allegedly going there to see a 14-year-old girl he is accused of being involved with sexually for a couple of weeks. Teachers reportedly asked Hayes to leave the school, then discovered there had been inappropriate behavior between him and the 14-year-old, possibly in his vehicle at the school. The age of consent in Georgia is 16, according to Cobb. Hayes had been serving a probationary period with the Trion Volunteer Fire Department, which is standard for new volunteers, according to Fire Chief Jimmy Anderson. When the department became aware of his arrest, Hayes was relieved of his volunteer duties.
