The Chattooga County library Board of Trustees will hold their next quarterly meeting at 4 p.m. Tuesday, Oct. 23, at the Summerville Library.
A packed house at last night's General Election Forum at the Dandee Denson Shrine Auditorium Thursday night. Candidates for Sheriff, Sole County Commissioner and State House Representatives fielded questions from representatives of the Summerville News, Sky 21, and Am1180. All candidates spoke to the audience at the end of the forum. Sheriff's candidate James Dawson, a republican said being sheriff isn't something you learn but something you're born with. He said he would protect the citizens of the county with a department that would respect the citizens. His Democratic challenger Mark Schrader said it's his goal to utilize 19 years of law enforcement experience and if elected sheriff he will earn the respect and trust of the county's residents, not demand it.
Republican Candidate for Sole Commissioner Dewayne Dawson said regardless of political affiliation, we all need to come together and work together. Incumbant Commissioner, Democrat, Jason Winters said "Jason Winters is not afraid to focus on the tough issues." Incumbant State Representative Barbara Massey Reece, A Democrat told those in attendance that she has worked very hard in the past to represent the voter's opinion and not her agenda, the agenda of a party, or the agenda of a special group. Her Republican challger Eddie Lumsden who is from Floyd County, told the crowd, I am not from here but I have worked in the county for 25 years and am concerned about the county and will be interested and available to his constituents if elected to the post.
Two Chattooga County Residents booked into the Floyd County Jail on Wednesday and Thursday, according to the Floyd County Jail docket. Amy Darlene Rhodes, of Halls Valley Road, Trion was booked into the Floyd Jail on Thursday on a hold for Chattooga County. The arrest of 41-year-old Rhodes originated in Chattooga County.
Christy Lynn Smith, of Airport Road, Trion was booked into the jail on Thursday. The arrest of 30 year old Smith by the Floyd County Sheriff's Department was on charges of failure to appear on a bench warrant.

Georgia wildlife authorities are warning against poaching ahead of the start of deer hunting season.
Gov. Nathan Deal has signed a proclamation declaring Oct. 20 as "Turn In Poachers Day." It coincides with the start of the firearms deer hunt in Georgia.
Hunters poach deer when they hunt outside legal hours, from a public road, kill too many animals or hunt in unauthorized areas.
Officials at the Department of Natural Resources say people reporting poaching should collect, if possible, enough information to describe the violation, the violator, when it happened and the vehicle the poacher was driving.

The Little River Canyon National Preserve, just across the state line in neighboring Cherokee and DeKalb counties of Alabama, will celebrate 20 years as a unit of the National Park system on Sunday. The Little River Canyon National Preserve was established by an act of Congress on October 21, 1992.
The park, river and canyon have come a long way since being known as a dumping ground for stolen automobiles throughout much of the 20th century. About 30 years ago, the last week of September in 1982, the body of little Lisa Ann Millican, who was kidnapped from the old Riverbend Mall in Rome, was recovered from the canyon.
Park Superintendent Gail Bishop said that the NPS has taken major steps during the past two decades to preserve the natural beauty of the canyon and promote the uniqueness of the Little River itself. The 12-mile long canyon is the longest canyon east of the Mississippi River and is approximately 600 feet deep much of that distance.
The river is included in the National Wild and Scenic River system and is a popular stream for kayak and canoe enthusiasts.
The park has witnessed many changes in recent years, including the addition of a handicapped accessible boardwalk to make it easier for all people to enjoy the beauty of the Little River Falls. The special boardwalk will be dedicated as part of the activities Sunday, which will get underway at 1 p.m. CDT.
A new Alabama Highway 35 bridge at the falls brought new access to the area, and the Canyon Center, built in conjunction with Jacksonville State University, provides a center for educational activities that take place virtually every weekend.
The Little River National Preserve is the largest National Park Service area in the state of Alabama.
Special children’s activities slated for Sunday include a clay art table and historic Native American games.
Refreshments will be served after the dedication.

Firearms deer season opens Saturday in Georgia, according to the DNR. It lasts through January 1 in the Northern Zone. Last year, hunters harvested more than 340-thousand deer in the state. The limit is 10 antlerless deer and nor more than 2 antlered deer per season. A valid hunting license is required, along with a big game license and a deer harvest record. An additional license is required to hunt on a State Wildlife Management Area. Hunters must wear 500 square inches of fluorescent orange above the waist.

Georgia's unemployment rate dropped to nine percent in September, as the state had the fewest new claims for jobless benefits in five years. The unemployment rate was down by two-tenths of a percent over the month, and is down from 9.8 percent a year ago. Labor Commissioner Mark Butler said he was pleases, especially with manufacturing jobs, which had the largest over the month gain since 1994. The number of long-term unemployed workers in Georgia also declined for the fifth straight month.
BBQ, Stew, Chili Cookoff Saturday
The Barbecue, Stew and Chili Cookoff is Saturday.
The cookoff is a benefit for The Well, a local shelter for homeless women. According to shelter Director Roxie Weesner, funds from the event will be used for general operating expenses at the shelter. The cookoff is The Well's biggest fundraiser of the year.
So far, there are 12 vendors set up to compete in the barbecue competition; three in stew and four in chili. First, second and third place prizes will be awarded by a panel of judges in all three categories with the first place barbecue winner receiving a trophy. Prizes of $50 to $100 will be awarded in all categories. A People's Choice award will also be named in the barbecue category. Chattooga Countians are asked to come out and cast their vote/
13 vendors will also be on hand with arts and crafts and other foods.
There will also be two drawings for $100. The event is from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. at Dowdy Park. All winners will be announced at 4 p.m.
The event is part of the Steam into Summerville Railroad Days 2012 that continues through the first week of November. About 175 passengers are expected to travel from Chattanooga to Summerville by steam engine for the event.
Trion High School will name its 2012 Homecoming Queen tonight. On the homecoming court are Freshman, Anistin Smith; Sophomores, Autumn Bandy and Alexis Rabun; Juniors, Crystal Lee, Katie McNew and Jansen Pierce; and vying for Homecoming Queen Rachel Allison, Caitlyn Wells, Danielle Lewis, Hannah Patterson, and Morgan Young. The Trion Bulldogs take on Southwest Atlanta Christian at 7:30 p.m.
