Voter inaccuracies have been reported in the State 12th District House Race with some voters in Floyd County reporting being given wrong ballots. That according to a press release issued by State House Representative Barbara Massey Reece, of Chattooga County, on Thursday.
According to the release, Reece was contacted by a Floyd County voter who had voted early for the November 6 General Election that lives in the newly drawn 12th State House District and reported to Reece that he was given an electronic ballot that did not contain the district's contest.
Reece consulted the approved district lines and found that the voter did indeed live within the boundaries of the newly designated 12th district. She then notified the Floyd County election officials while looking into the matter and discovered that there were several inaccuracies in the 12th District maps used by Floyd County to prepare the electronic ballots.
In the release, Reece says, "I spent a lot of time the other with Floyd County election officials. It appears to me that there are several incidents of whole streets or portions of streets and neighborhoods, that have been marked as being out of the 12th District, when in fact, they are in the district.
Reece said, she is disappointed that some residents in Floyd County are being denied the opportunity to vote for who their State Representative will be. She said she is raising the issue to warn all potential early voters to check their ballots before they finalize them during the early voting process.
She says if you think you live in the 12th District and do not see the race on your ballot, please alert poll workers immediately.
Reece says she is sending a letter to the Secretary of State's Office informing them of the voting inacuraccies that are taking place and asking what remedies are available.
Trion Police Chief Chad Spraggins has proclaimed October 23-31 as Red Ribbon Week in the Town of Trion.
The Red Ribbon Campaign was established by Congress in 1988 to encourage a drug-free lifestyle and involvement in drug prevention and reduction efforts and October 23-31 has been designated National Red Ribbon Week, which encourages Americans to wear a red ribbon to show their support for a drug-free environment.
According to Spraggins, communities across America have been plagued by numerous problems associated with illicit drug use and those that traffic in drugs. He says there is hope in winning the war on drugs and that hope lies in education and drug demand reduction, coupled with the hard work and the determination of organizations, such as local police departments and others. Spraggins added that citizen support is one of the most effective tools in the effort to reduce the use of illicit drugs in our communities.
He urges Trion residents and all Chattooga Countians to wear red ribbons this week in observance of Red Ribbon Week.
The Energy Assistance Program officially opens on November 1 beginning with the home bound/elderly.
The Energy Assistance Program, or EAP, pays for some home heating and cooling costs for low-income eligible families including those in crisis situations. It is administered through North Georgia Community Action Inc., and the Georgia Department of Human Services.
Home bound households are defined as a household in which every member is confined to the home because of medical conditions or disabilities. Elderly households are defined as house holds in which every member is age 65 or older, unless there is someone in the household younger than age 18.
All households participating in the program must provide verification and meet the income criteria, be responsible for paying the cost of energy for home heating directly to the supplier, and be a U.S. citizen or alien admitted to the U.S. for lawful, permanent residence.
Applications for all energy assistance programs can be made through a local Community Action Agency or non-profit organization. The assistance is available in all 159 counties in Georgia. The general public cannot apply for Regular Energy Assistance until the first of December each year.
