Detectives from the Calhoun Police Department are currently investigating a new lead in a missing person's case involving a local man who was reporting missing by family members back in 2010.

Calhoun Police, working in conjunction with the Cobb County Police Department, discovered evidence linking human remains found near I-75 in Kennesaw Ga. to a Calhoun man who went missing on August 11th 2010.  

The remains were discovered on Wednesday morning May 23, 2012 by a man picking up cans along the interstate in Cobb County.

"Due to the evidence obtained in this case we strongly believe the remains are that of our missing person, however we are not releasing the name of the victim until DNA testing has been completed and family members have been notified." said Det. Lt. Tony Pyle.

 A DOUBLE MURDER IS UNDER INVESTIGATION NEAR DALTON… AND AUTHORITIES ARE SEARCHING FOR A SUSPECT IN THE CASE.  THE BODIES WERE DISCOVERED IN A QUIET NEIGHBORHOOD IN DAWNVILLE THURSDAY MORNING.  
    SHERIFF SCOTT CHITWOOD SAID A 9 YEAR OLD GIRL DISCOVERED THE BODY OF HER GRANDFATHER ABOUT 7 AM… AND HAD A NEIGHBOR CALL 9-1-1.  THE BODY OF ANOTHER FAMILY MEMBER WAS ALSO FOUND.  
    THE GBI WAS CALLED IN… ALONG WITH A HELICOPTER UNIT FROM THE GEORGIA STATE PATROL.   

Two Republicans have joined the field in the Georgia Senate District 52 race.Hayden Collins, a 47-year-old Cartersville efficiency manager, has qualified as a Republican, as has Republican Chuck Hufstetler. They will face off against Republican David Doss, of Rome,  for the seat with represents a small portion of Chattooga County. 

Collins who lives in Cartersville has a full-time job is as a resource efficiency manager for the U.S. Marine Corps base in Albany. He also has contracts with the military at Fort Benning, the U.S. Navy submarine base in Camden County and other bases worldwide.

A life-long Republican, Hufstetler is a member of the TEA Party, NRA, Georgia Right to Life, and Chamber of Commerce. Chuck Hufstetler was a Floyd County Commissioner from 1999 to 2007. He has owned Paul’s Oyster Bar since 1994 and is an anesthesiolgist at Redmond Hospital.

Georgia's governor and the state health department have launched a program aimed at addressing childhood obesity through government, philanthropic and academic efforts.

In announcing the SHAPE program on Wednesday, Gov. Nathan Deal's Office said Georgia has the second highest obesity rate in the country for children ages 10 to 17. Nearly 40% of Georgia children are considered overweight or obese.

Georgia SHAPE features a website with a fitness directory and the initiative will also promote breastfeeding, exercise and better nutritional options for students.

Child care programs implementing specific wellness policies and related training will earn the Governor's Award, designating them a Georgia SHAPE-compliant facility. Schools will also be encouraged to support regulations that provide 30 minutes of daily physical activity for every student.

    THIS YEAR'S JUSTICE ASSISTANCE OR "JAG" GRANT, WILL BE USED BY THE LOCAL SHERIFF'S DEPARTMENT FOR A NUMBER OF NEEDED ITEMS.  THE MONEY WILL HELP REPLACE AN ELECTRONIC LINE-SCAN FINGERPRINT MACHINE… GPS NAVIGATION DEVICES FOR VEHICLES USED TO TRANSPORT PRISONERS OUT-OF-COUNTY… PLUS RADIOS, NEW HANDCUFFS AND OTHER LAW ENFORCEMENT GEAR.
    THE "JAG" GRANT IS 100-PERCENT FEDERAL FUNDING, WITH NO CONTRIBUTION REQUIRED FROM THE LOCAL BUDGET.

Several Democratic candidates have qualified this morning at the Chattooga County Courthouse – all incumbents so far: John Everett, Kathy Brown, Lan Cordle, Jon Payne and Tracy Maddux. No Republicans have qualified yet.

The Wings Over North Georgia Air Show has confirmed the special appearance of the Red, White and Loud Tour concert featuring country artist Aaron Tippin with the historic B-25 “Devil Dog” aircraft.

The concert will take place Richard B. Russell Regional Airport on Friday, September 28 after the Performer Kick-Off Party and Twilight Air Show Preview featuring several of the performers from the weekend air show.

Gates open at noon on September 28, and Aaron Tippin will perform at approximately 8:30 PM. 
The Canadian Forces Snowbirds and Black Diamond Jet Teams will headline the Saturday and Sunday, September 29 & 30 lineup at Richard B. Russell (Tower Field) Regional Airport..

One of the rites of passage of springtime is the opening of area pools and the  Trion Recreation Department opened its pool on Monday Pool hours are Monday through Saturday from 12:30 to 5:00pm.  The cost is $3 per day with Individual season passes available for $40 and family passes for up to five people for $100.00. The Trion Board of Education Monday accepted four resignations and one retirement, while approving one hiring recommendation.

The council in its regular meeting accepted the resignations of Phaedra Roberts, director of federal programs;Jennifer Thompson, speech language pathologist and Jon Lovinggood, high school teacher and coach. The board approved the hiring of Amber Powell for the speech language pathologist position. The board also accepted the resignation of Teri Abernathy, elementary paraprofessional; and retirement of Herman "Bud Wilbanks, custodian. 

In other business the board discussed financial reports for the Fifty Yard Club and Band Booster Club and approved a fund raiser for the High School Softball team.
