The Chattooga County Ag Fair continues this evening with gates opening at 5 PM. The cost is $5 for gate admission, but tonight is also veteran and military appreciation night. Any active service military or veteran will get free gate admission.
The 2024 Chattooga County Agricultural Fair opened yesterday with sunny skies and cooler temperatures than our area has seen for most of the month of August. The high-temperature yesterday was below 90 degrees, and by the time the fair was in full swing on Thursday, temperatures had dropped into the low to mid-80s. The nice weather is expected to last all the way through Sunday when the fair closes. The National Weather Service says that we can expect temperatures to warm up a bit for Saturday and Sunday, but still only in the low to mid-90s, and nighttime temperatures are expected to be in the low to mid-60s. Best of all – there’s little to no chance of rain between now and Sunday, the last day of the fair.
Both the Chattooga Board of Education and Sole Commissioner Blake Elsberry have announced that they will not be raising property taxes for Chattooga County property owners this year. The millage rate will remain the same as it was last year for the board of education, while Commissioner Elsberry says he will be rolling back the millage rate. The board of education has been able to achieve a balanced budget without the need for more local property tax revenue thanks to the state equalization formula, which will allow the county school system an extra $2 million for the upcoming year.

A thirty-four-year-old woman was arrested on multiple charges after a traffic stop by a Chattooga County Deputy. The incident happened in the predawn hours of August 14th.
It is opening day for the 2024 Chattooga County Agricultural Fair. The fair gates will open at 5 PM this evening. Regular gate admission is $5 each night of the fair, but tonight is Student Night, sponsored by the City of Summerville. Students will get free gate admission. Chattooga County Volunteer Fire Departments will be coordinating parking at the fair and a donation is suggested. All of the parking donations go to local fire departments. Former Georgia Governor Nathan Deal has released his first children’s book and he will be in Rome today to promote it.
Once again this year, the Chattooga County Farm Bureau is sponsoring the demonstration kitchen at the fair. Today is the opening day of the fair and the demonstration area will feature Gwen Fisher from Lyerly. Ms. Fisher will show how to create a soothing salve to cool down the burn and itch of fire ant stings using a plant commonly found in our area. The demonstration area is free with your paid gate admission of $5 to the fair.
A network of current and former Georgia inmates used drones to smuggle drugs and other contraband into state prisons, federal prosecutors said Wednesday in announcing charges against nearly two dozen people.
The Trion Town Council will hold their regular workshop and council meeting for August coming up tonight at 6 PM. The meeting will start with the workshop and the regular meeting will follow shortly thereafter. The public is invited to attend both the workshop and council meeting which will be held in the Trion Town Hall Council Room. Also, a reminder, Trion Public Works Department will go back to their regular schedule starting on Monday of next week. The public works department has been on earlier, summer hours due to the heat.
