A man from McDonough is facing multiple charges after allegedly traveling to Floyd County to meet someone he thought was a minor for sex.

Chattooga County saw a jump in the number of workers filing first-time unemployment claims from June to July. There were fifty more unemployment claims in July than there were in June, for a total of 104 unemployment claims last month. That compares to ninety in July of 2023. Georgia Labor Commissioner Bruce Thompson announced on Monday that Georgia’s July unemployment rate was 3.4 percent, up one-tenth from a revised 3.3 percent in June. The unemployment rate was nine-tenths lower than the national unemployment rate. “Georgia’s labor force is larger and more dynamic than ever,” Thompson said. “Our challenge—and our opportunity—is to partner with the business community to create jobs that meet the evolving needs of hardworking Georgians. With over 5 million workers, we have the talent. Now, we need more jobs to keep unemployment low and transform that talent into lasting success.” Jobs were up by 2,600 over the month and up by 77,600 over the year to 4,980,900, an all-time high.
In April of this year, Chattooga County FFA and 4-H members began their poultry projects specifically to participate in the Chattooga County Agricultural Fair. Each student received 8 three-day old chicks to raise, was required to keep records, and attend a workshop on how to select their best three for judging. The student’s selected birds will be judged on August 28th, at 5:00 pm. Pens of three hens will be auctioned off at 7:00 pm with all the proceeds going to the student. Please arrive by 6:30 PM to receive a bid number. Having a livestock project promotes responsibility, self-motivation, responsible record keeping and agricultural education. Summerville Police were called last Wednesday night after a man who was sitting on his porch on First Avenue reported hearing a loud noise that sounded like glass shattering. When police arrived and spoke with the man, he said that he saw two flashlights in the distance and then a short time thereafter, heard the crashing sound and believed it to be on Cox Street. When the officer investigated, he found a house on Cox Street where someone had thrown a concrete flowerpot through the window. The owner of the building had a surveillance camera and was quickly in contact with police. When the owner arrived on the scene, he and the officer went through the house and found no more property damage. While observing the broken glass, the officer spotted a speck of blood on some of the shattered glass. A piece of the glass with the blood speck was sent to the GBI crime lab and the incident remains under investigation.
The Walker County Board of Commissioners will hold their meeting for the month of August coming up this Thursday, August 22, 2024 at 6 PM at the Walker County Courthouse Annex in LaFayette. The board of commissioners is expected to adopt the millage rate for Walker County property owners at Thursday’s meeting. You can see a complete agenda for Thursday’s meeting below. Georgia gas prices declined at the pumps compared to a week ago. Georgians are paying an average price of $3.22 per gallon for regular unleaded gasoline (subject to change overnight). Monday’s state average was 1 cent less than a week ago,14 cents less than a month ago, and 41 cents less than this time last year. It costs drivers an average price of $48.30 to fill a 15-gallon tank of regular gasoline. Georgians are paying $2.00 less to fill up at the pump compared to a month ago.
Yesterday, the Chattooga County Ag Building was a busy place with people bringing in their blue ribbon items for the 2024 Chattooga County Agricultural Fair. If you didn’t get by yesterday to enter your artwork, photography, needlework or food preservation items, you have another opportunity this morning. Those items will be received between the hours of 9 AM and 1 PM, and judging will take place on those items tomorrow, in advance of the fair’s opening day on Thursday. Residents of neighboring counties are also welcome to bring blue ribbon items to the fair. That includes Floyd, Walker and Gordon Counties in Georgia as well as DeKalb and Cherokee Counties in Alabama. Then, starting at 1 PM on Wednesday, the blue ribbon department will begin accepting horticulture, agriculture and honey. Judging for honey will take place at 6 PM on Wednesday evening. Be sure to get your blue ribbon items by the Chattooga County Ag Building and enter to win a blue ribbon at the 2024 Chattooga County Agricultural Fair.
