Georgia Attorney General Chris Carr on Friday announced the hire of former Cobb County Assistant District Attorney Timothy Ruffini to lead Georgia’s first statewide Organized Retail Crime Unit. Ruffini will oversee a team of prosecutors and investigators dedicated to combating the criminal networks that are engaged in recurring thefts and acts of violence targeting businesses throughout the state. This new unit is housed in the Attorney General’s Prosecution Division, which also includes Carr’s Gang Prosecution Unit, his Human Trafficking Prosecution Unit, and his White Collar and Cyber Crime Unit.

The full moon Monday night will appear unusually bright because it happens to be a supermoon, which occurs when the moon is within 90% of its closest distance to Earth, or perigee, in the moon’s ellipitical orbit. A supermoon appears about 15% brighter compared to when the moon is farthest away (apogee). The full moon will peak at 2:26 p.m. EDT on Monday, when it will be 224,917 miles from Earth.

The Georgia Department of Public Health (DPH) has confirmed a measles case in a metro Atlanta resident who was not fully vaccinated. The individual was exposed to measles while traveling out of the country. DPH is working to identify anyone who may have had contact with the individual while they were infectious.

A deputy was killed while responding to a domestic dispute in Northwest Georgia on Saturday evening. This is the first time the Paulding County Sheriff’s Office has lost a deputy in the line of duty, Maj. Ashley Henson said in a news briefing Saturday.

Summerville Police were called to a West First Street address this past week in reference to a theft.  The responding officer met with the complainant who said that someone had thrown a rock through the window of her daughter’s car overnight and stolen items from the back seat.  The stolen items included a Northface backpack containing school work, Apple Airpods and a Vera Bradley lunch box.  The driver’s side window on the vehicle was shattered and a rock was found in the floorboard.

Lyerly Elementary School PTO will meet on Wednesday, August 28th in the Lyerly School Cafeteria at 4:15 PM.  The meeting will be an opportunity for parents to connect, stay informed, and get involved in their children’s education.  Also, the meeting will provide a platform for parents to hear updates on news and upcoming events at Lyerly School.  Those who attend may voice their opinions on activities supported by the Lyerly Parent Teacher Organization and help make a positive impact on the students and the Lyerly Community.  If you can’t attend the meeting, you are encouraged to follow the Lyerly PTO on their Facebook Page.
