The Atlanta Journal Constitution reported on Wednesday  that Republican Georgia School Superintendent Richard Woods will include AP African American Studies in the state catalog, assuring it will earn state funding and students who take it will qualify for a grade-point average boost in their HOPE Scholarship calculation.

City Of Summerville Bid Opening Today

The City of Summerville is seeking bids for work at the new public works building that is being built adjacent to the Summerville Industrial Park.  The city is looking for bids for sheetrock work, heating and air and electrical work.  Also, the city is seeking a bid for a new backhoe for public works.  Bids are due by 2 PM today at Summerville City Hall, located on Georgia Avenue across from Summerville First Baptist Church.  Bids will be open at 2 PM and the public is invited to attend.

Investigation Continues Into Summerville Apartment Fire

Chattooga County Sheriff Mark Schrader says that investigators with his office are working with the Georgia State Fire Marshal’s Office in connection with a fire on Tuesday afternoon at the Maplewood Apartments just outside the city limits of Summerville.  Sheriff Schrader says that three apartment units were damaged by the fire.  Two of the units that received damage from the fire were occupied and one was vacant.  As of Wednesday, there was no word as to the cause of the fire.

Chattooga Fair Opens Two Weeks From Today

The Chattooga County Agricultural Fair will open two weeks from today and run from Thursday, August 22nd – Sunday, August 25th.  The blue ribbon department of the fair will begin receiving items on Monday, August 19th.  Residents of Chattooga, Walker and Floyd Counties in Georgia may enter items in the fair as well as residents of Cherokee and DeKalb Counties in Alabama.  Submissions should be work that has been completed since August of 2023 and fall into one of the divisions listed in the 2024 Chattooga County Fair Book.  Copies of the book are available at the Chattooga County Extension Office.  You can see a schedule for receiving times for the blue ribbon department below:
