Municipalities all over the state have struggled to keep employees as better-paying jobs are plentiful right now.
In fact, the Georgia Department of Labor says that there are more jobs available in Georgia now than at any other time in history. The City of Menlo is trying to be proactive in employee retention and recently voted to give pay raises to three city employees.
The Menlo City Council approved the pay raises at their last meeting, saying they will review the city’s employee handbook and discuss the handbook at the city’s next council meeting.
Trion City Schools start class later this week. Parents of Trion students will have an orientation coming up tomorrow evening, Wednesday, July 31st at 5 PM at the Trion School Cafeteria. A meet the teacher drop-in event for Pre-K and first graders will take place on Thursday between 3 PM and 5 PM. Second through fifth grade students meet the teacher drop-in will be held from 4 PM until 6 PM. The first day of school for Trion is this Friday, August 2nd.
New jobless numbers were released by the Georgia Department of Labor on Thursday of last week. The numbers show an increase in unemployment in every region in the Peach State. Unemployment numbers have been consistently low for over two years, but the number of workers filing first-time unemployment claims in June was up statewide.

Georgia’s gas price average has slowed at the pumps compared to a week ago. Georgians are paying an average price of $3.33 per gallon for regular unleaded gasoline (subject to change overnight). Monday’s sate average was 1 cent less than a week ago,1 cent more than a month ago, and 21 cents less than this time last year. It costs drivers an average price of $49.95 to fill a 15-gallon tank of regular gasoline. Georgians are now paying $3.00 less to fill up at the pump compared to a year ago.

The Summerville City Council will hold a called meeting coming up this evening to interview candidates for the position of City Manager. Current City Manager Andrea Surratt will be leaving her post at the end of the month and the council is expected to hire a replacement before August 15th.
