Heat Advisory Issued Through The Weekend

An Excessive Heat Advisory is in effect through the holiday weekend, with heat indexes expected between 102-108 degrees, posing a risk for the elderly, young children, and animals.

The National Weather Service in Peachtree City issued the Heat Advisory from 1 PM to 7 PM (on July 4th) for northwest Georgia.

The heat is expected to linger through the weekend.

Scattered thunderstorms could impact celebrations today and through the weekend.

Woman Leaving Hays State Prison Arrested For Drug Possession

On Friday of last week, a vehicle that had left the area of Hays State Prison was pulled over for not having the license plate in the right area. When pulled over the female driver was asked to exit the vehicle and when she did she tossed what appeared to be a methamphetamine pipe under her vehicle. A deputy retrieved the suspected pipe and observed it had a white crystalline substance in it. Fourty-three-year-old Renada Diamond of Cedartown was then placed under arrest for possession of drug related objects, possession of meth and abandonment of dangerous drugs/poisons/controlled substances.

GSP Releases Information On Monday Accident Near Tractor Supply In Summerville

The Georgia State Patrol has released information on an accident that happened on Monday on Highway 27 near Tractor Supply.  According to the Georgia State Patrol, a vehicle was traveling south on Highway 27 in the turn lane and a second vehicle was traveling north on Highway 27 in the left lane.  The first vehicle failed to yield before crossing the highway and struck the other in its front.  The second vehicle left the east edge of the roadway and struck a concrete water department marker.  After striking the second vehicle, the first vehicle began to rotate counterclockwise and came to rest in the northbound lane of Highway 27.  There were minor injuries associated with the accident and all of the occupants of both vehicles were treated by EMS.  The accident is still under investigation by the Georgia State Patrol.

Most Government Offices Closed Until Monday Of Next Week

Chattooga County governmental offices, along with municipal offices around the county are closed today for Independence Day. Local governmental offices are taking off today and tomorrow and will be reopening on Monday of next week. Post offices and many businesses are closed today as well.

More Details On Wednesday Morning Fatality

A bicycle rider lost his life on Old Highway 27 in the pre-dawn hours of Wednesday (July 3rd).  According to Chattooga County Sheriff Mark Schrader, Robert Dalton of Trion was riding a bicycle when it collided with a moped that was being driven by a male subject.  Dalton succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced dead at the scene of the accident.  The subject on the moped was taken to Atrium Health Floyd in Rome with injuries.  Sheriff Shrader says that Dalton’s body is being sent to the GBI Crime Lab for an autopsy.  WZQZ will have more details as they become available.

Fatal Accident On Old Highway 27

Chattooga County Sheriff Mark Schrader said on Wednesday morning there was an accident on Old Highway 27 north of Trion where one person was fatally injured. More information will be released later this morning.  WZQZ will have details as they become available.

Georgia DOT Suspending Lane Closures For Holiday

The Georgia Department of Transportation (Georgia DOT) is suspending lane closures on Georgia interstates and state routes for the upcoming July 4th holiday weekend. The suspension will begin at noon on Wednesday, July 3, and continue until 10 p.m. on Sunday, July 7. During this period, construction-related lane closures will be on hold to facilitate smoother travel.
