On Nov. 22, the USDA mailed survey codes to all known agriculture producers across the 50 states with an invitation to respond online to the 2022 Census of Agriculture at www.agcounts.usda.gov. The ag census is the nation’s only comprehensive and impartial agriculture data for every state, county, and territory. By completing the survey, producers across the nation can tell their story and help generate impactful opportunities that better serve them and future generations of producers.
One of the oldest houses in Chattooga County will be decked out for Christmas and locals can come enjoy a look at Christmas-past at the Couey House at Dowdy Park during Christmas in the Park on Friday.
A fifty-three-year-old Rome man who has had numerous run-ins with the law over the past several years was sentenced in Chattooga County Superior Court for violation of probation. Larry Dewayne Justice was arrested back in 2016 for stealing a Bobcat-brand farm tractor worth $20,000. In October of 2020, Justice was arrested for stealing a camper shell, laser level, stud gun, plants, a pressure washer, a cart, and iron from the backyard of a home and then selling the items on Facebook marketplace. In addition to the theft arrests, Justice has had violations of his probation for marijuana possession. Justice received a sentence of three years in prison from the Chattooga County Superior Court for violating the terms of his probation.
Trion Heights Baptist Church will be presenting their free drive-thru Nativity starting this week. The event will be held nightly from December 7th – December 21st at 7:30 PM. Families can enjoy the original Christmas Story from the comfort of their vehicle. There are over 52,000 Christmas lights synched to Christmas music. The event runs from 6:30 PM – 7:30 PM at the church located at 301 Rossville Boulevard in Trion.
The Salvation Army of Rome held a canned food drive last week in advance of the Holiday season. The Rome Salvation Army serves Floyd, Polk and Chattooga Counties. In addition to providing free groceries or meals, The Salvation Army helps vulnerable families sign up for public assistance programs that address hunger. The Salvation Army in Rome operates a Food Pantry that is open on Tuesday’s and Thursday’s from 9 AM – 3 PM at their location at 317 East First Avenue in Rome. The Salvation Army food pantry serves everyone from low-income families, single parents, senior citizens, unemployed individuals, disabled veterans, working poor, and anyone else in need of assistance.
Chattooga County Probate Judge Gary Woods has announced that his office will be closed this coming Wednesday, December 7th. The office closure is due to the runoff election on Tuesday of this week. The Chattooga County Probate Judge’s office is located inside the Chattooga County Courthouse and is normally open from 8 AM – 5 PM, Monday – Friday.
A trio of respiratory illnesses is to blame for a decrease in blood donors across North Georgia, according to Blood Assurance.
Secretary of State Brad Raffensperger is once again reminding Georgia business owners to protect their businesses from rip-off solicitations. Out-of-state entities are targeting Georgia business owners with mailers regarding their annual registration that make responses look required and do not include required disclaimers. These companies charge Georgia business owners significantly higher rates to complete their annual registration than required by Georgia law.
The City of Summerville will be presenting Christmas in the Park at Dowdy Park this coming Friday, December 9, 2022. The event will run from 6 PM – 9 PM and will feature the Best Dressed Elf Contest, the Ugly Christmas Sweater Contest, the Christmas Cookie Smack Down Contest and the lighting of the tree, which will take place at 7 PM by the winner of the Best Dressed Elf Contest. Atrium Health Floyd Emergency Medical Services (EMS) has been participating in the Toys for Tots drive one way or another since the 1990s, when toys could be dropped off at the entrance of Floyd Medical Center. In 2009 EMS joined with the United State Marine Corps League to collect toys in multiple locations in Floyd County and Polk County.
