The Summerville City Council will hold a called meeting coming up tomorrow at Summerville City Hall.  According to an agenda for the meeting released on Wednesday of last week, the premise for the meeting is to talk about the mid-year budget.  It will be the first meeting for the council since Summerville City Manager Janice Galloway’s contract was not renewed by the council.  There is no item on the agenda about the city manager’s position, but it will be the first opportunity council members have to talk about the hiring of an interim city manager since the announcement about Galloway’s forced retirement.  The council has expressed their plans to hire an interim city manager and then start the search for a permanent city manager to replace Galloway.  Tomorrow’s meeting will be held at 5:30 PM at Summerville City Hall and the public is welcomed to attend.

Georgia State Troopers have been busy investigating holiday traffic fatalities in Georgia during this Thanksgiving holiday travel period that began on Wednesday.  Half-way through the holiday travel period, there were already ten fatalities.  The travel period ends tonight.  Most of the fatalities were being reported around the Atlanta metro area. Last year, during the 2021 Thanksgiving holiday weekend, state troopers investigated 589 crashes, resulting in 267 injuries and 20 deaths. Those traveling back home today are being encouraged to buckle up, slow down, don’t drive distracted and never drink and drive.

A parent of a student at Chattooga High School reported a social media threat to the Chattooga County Sheriff’s Office last week.  The parent said that he had seen messages on social media sent to his child with threats to “shoot up” their residence.  A responding deputy spoke with a school resource officer from Chattooga High School who said that they were aware of the threats and were taking action do deal with the student or students in question who had allegedly sent the threatening messages.  The parent said that they wanted a report on file at the Chattooga County Sheriff’s Office concerning the incident.

Quick action by some Northwest Georgia police officers prevented a Thanksgiving tragedy.  According to a media release from the Polk County Police Department, shortly after midnight on Thanksgiving day, officers responded to a call in Cedartown in reference to a suicide attempt.

In the latest round of COVID-19 numbers, Chattooga County saw a slight decrease in the number of new cases over the past week.  The Georgia Department of Public Health reports COVID-19 cases weekly and the new reports come out on Wednesday of each week.  Last week, there were five new COVID-19 cases reported in Chattooga County.  This week that number dropped to four new cases.  Hospitalizations in Northwest Georgia from COVID-19 were up slightly this past week.  Also, the Georgia Department of Public Health reported three COVID-19 deaths in Northwest Georgia; one each in Bartow, Gordon and Polk Counties.

The City of Summerville is gearing up for the annual Christmas Parade in downtown Summerville.  Once again this year, the parade will be held on a Friday evening.

Summerville Police are asking for the public’s help in finding a trailer that was stolen last month.  According to a social media post from the Summerville Police Department, the 18 foot, dual-axle, utility trailer was stolen inside the city limits of Summerville.  The truck pulling the trailer was a red, Ford F-150 truck that appears to have an Alabama tag.  Police believe that the driver of the truck was involved in a theft in Dade County.  If anyone has any information  concerning the whereabouts of the trailer or individuals involved in the theft please contact Detective Josh Strauss at 706-859-0912 or contact Chattooga County E-911 at 706-857-3400.
