An employee with the City of Summerville Water Department requested a report to be filed by the Chattooga County Sheriff’s Office after he found that a meter that had been locked by the City had been tampered with. The theft of services happened on Johnson Road in Summerville. The city employee said that there had been around $400 worth of water stolen. A report was filed on behalf of the city.
According to a report from the Chattooga County Sheriff’s Office, the sheriff’s department and the Georgia State Patrol were conducting a driver’s license check and safety checkpoint last week near Ridgeway Road in Trion, when a man pulled up and deputies smelled a strong odor of marijuana coming from the vehicle. The man admitted to having a small amount of marijuana and handed it over to deputies. While searching the vehicle, another small bag of marijuana was found, along with an open container of alcohol. The beer bottle was cold to the touch, according to the report from the sheriff’s office, and the man said he had just purchased the beer. A state trooper performed a field sobriety test which the driver passed. After determining that the driver was not impaired, the deputy issued a citation to Robert Leitner for an open container of alcohol and allowed him to leave.
A pedestrian was struck by an oncoming vehicle in Rome on Monday. Rome Police say that forty-two-year-old Patricia Barnes stepped out into the path of a 2007 Jeep Liberty that was turning onto Redmond Circle. Police say that the pedestrian was wearing earbuds and was not walking in the crosswalk. The incident happened around 10:41 AM on Monday. WZQZ has reported about the uptick in pedestrian accidents and deaths in Georgia and across the country. Chattooga County has seen four pedestrian deaths this year.

A fifty-nine-year-old Rome man was arrested by the Floyd County Police Department on Monday for multiple charges including Child Molestation and Strong-arm Rape.
The Summerville Police responded to a theft call on East Street. When a responding officer met with the complainant, he said that someone had stolen a pressure washer and two hoses from his vehicle. Christopher Timmons told the responding officer that the value of the stolen equipment was $1,800. The incident was turned over to an investigator.
According to a new report published by the Better Business Bureau (BBB), the tactics used by scammers have shifted drastically during the past several years, with scams being perpetrated online rising 87% since 2015. During the same period, scams perpetrated by phone dropped by 42%.
The Rome International Film Festival (RIFF) will be hosting the international premiere screening of the documentary ‘Her Name was Hester’ on RIFF’s opening night at the DeSoto Theatre located at 530 Broad St, Rome, GA 30161. On Nov. 10 at 6:00 p.m. there will be a red carpet walk for the media to interview the film’s subjects and filmmakers followed by the screening at 7:00 p.m. After the screening there will be a Q&A panel with the filmmakers and some of the family including: Brian Campbell, Stacie Marshall, members of the Mosley Family (the family featured in the film), Kim Severson (Pulitzer Prize winning NY Times journalist), Haley Smith, Austen Earp, Jeff Walsh, Matthew Raiford (Farmer/Chef) concerning the creation of the film; followed by a brief musical performance by members of the Mosley family who performed songs for the film.
Georgia Power has partnered with the nonprofit organization Voices for Georgia’s Children and the Georgia Department of Early Care and Learning for the ninth consecutive year to celebrate Pre-K Week across the state. This year will be the first in person week since the pandemic began in 2020. The goal of Pre-K Week is to reinforce the importance of quality early childhood education and to give legislators and local leaders around the state a chance to visit and read in classrooms for a first-hand experience in their communities.
