Summerville City Council Meeting Monday

The City of Summerville will hold a special called meeting on Monday evening at 5 PM at Summerville City Hall. The council will be having the second reading and adoption of the 2021-2022 midyear budget.  Also, the council will be discussing the city’s distilled spirits alcohol ordinance.  The council is also expected to approve the budget for the fireworks show on the Fourth of July.  The meeting is open to the public and can also be accessed remotely.

New Warden For Hays State Prison

The Georgia Department of Corrections (GDC) Commissioner Timothy C. Ward announced the reassignment of Shawn Emmons to Warden at Hays State Prison (SP) in Trion, effective March 1, 2022. As Warden, Emmons will be responsible for overseeing all staff members and 1,101 close security male offenders at the facility.

A building in downtown Summerville was destroyed by fire early on Friday morning.  Summerville Police say that the fire was intentionally set.

DNR Gives Update On Disease Affecting Trout At Summerville Fish Hatchery

Last year, “whirling disease” – a virus that can be deadly to fish – and Infectious Hematopoietic Necrosis Virus were found in trout at the Summerville Fish Hatchery in Chattooga County.  The disease was also found in fish at the Georgia Department of Natural Resources fish hatchery in Buford, Georgia.   The Georgia DNR says that while the diseases can be fatal for fish, it is not known to affect humans.  The DNR gave an update on the disease recently.
