Local Firefighters Conduct Training Exercise

Chattooga County’s fire departments conducted a live fire burn training exercise over the weekend.  The 2022 Chattooga County Recruit Class had sixteen students from seven different county fire departments participate in the event.  Assistant Menlo Fire Chief Matthew Willingham lead the exercises.   Departments participating in the event included: Gore, Lyerly, Menlo, Subligna and Teloga along with firefighters from the Hays Correctional Fire Department.

Trion Wrestler Named All-American At NHSCA Nationals

Trion High School’s Logan Eller made history this past weekend at the 33rd Annual High School Nationals wrestling tournament in Virginia Beach, Virginia.  Eller became the first wrestler in Trion High School history to make the podium and become a National All-American at the NHSCA Nationals.  Eller, who has dominated in GHSA wrestling during his high school career, has been training for the past few years with Guerrilla Wrestling Academy.  Congratulations to Logan Eller on being named a National All-American wrestler.

Governor Being Asked To Veto Local Legislation

A bill that would give a raise to Chattooga County’s state court solicitor passed both houses of the Georgia General Assembly, but State Rep. Eddie Lumsden (R-Armuchee) who initially supported the bill, told WZQZ News over the weekend that he would be asking Georgia Governor Brian Kemp to veto Senate Bill 616.

City Of Menlo Hiring For Maintenance Position

The City of Menlo is looking to hire a maintenance worker.  According to an ad published in last week’s local paper, the city is looking for an employee who can operate a backhoe and mow and use a string trimmer on city-owned property. Responsibilities would also include cleaning and maintaining the city’s park and pavilion along with general maintenance on city buildings.  The ad says that “water certification is a plus” but is not required. The hours are Monday-Friday from 8 AM until 5 PM.  Applications can be submitted for the job, which pays $15 per hour, at Menlo City Hall.  If you have questions you can call 706-862-2440.

Bonnie Fletcher Returning To Radio Before The May Primary

WZQZ’s Bonnie Fletcher has been off the air since she qualified to run in the Republican Primary in May.  The Federal Communications Commission says that broadcast media employees cannot be on the airwaves unless certain criteria are met.  Basically, the FCC says that equal air time must be given to any other candidates in a race, unless those candidates agree to sign a waiver allowing the broadcast media employee to be on the radio or television.

Lyerly Town Limits Could Be Expanding

The Town of Lyerly could be expanding if Governor Brian Kemp signs legislation that passed recently.  A bill in the General Assembly that was introduced by State Senator Jeff Mullis (R-Chickamauga) would extend the current town limits to just past Smith Iron Works on Highway 114.
