MRS. VELMA LEE STARLING MORTON – AGE 97, – Of Summerville, Georgia passed away on Saturday, March 12, 2022.
Summerville Police responded to a call about a vehicle hitting an apartment building on Friday of last week. According to a report from the police department, a 2012 Kia Soul driven by Kimberly Johnson struck an apartment on Lewis Street North in Summerville. Johnson told police that when she started the car it began to move and she had no control over the vehicle. The accident caused damage to both the building and the vehicle, according to the report.
Former President Donald Trump is still showing his displeasure with losing the popular vote in Georgia in the last Presidential election.
A Gaylesville, Alabama woman was arrested on driving under the influence of alcohol charges last week, according to a report from the Chattooga County Sheriff’s Office.
Georgia farmers produce more chickens, peanuts and pecans than any other state. Georgia is second among U.S. states in production of cotton lint, cotton seed and watermelons. The state is third in cantaloupe and peach production and fourth in blueberry production.
Scammers are always on the lookout for ways to cheat people out of their money. While the “jury duty” scam is not new, it has been making its rounds in Chattooga County recently.
By many counts, it is often one of the best fireworks displays in Northwest Georgia and once again this year the City of Summerville will be hosting a “Celebrate Independence” event at the Chattooga County Ag Building off Highway 100 in Summerville. The fireworks display returned this past year after taking off a year because of the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020. This year, the event will be held on the Fourth of July. July 4th falls on a Monday, which means most folks will get a three-day weekend to celebrate this year. The event is always open and free to the public and the city will have other activities leading up to the finale, the fireworks display. The council made the decision to host the event on the Fourth of July at their council meeting on Monday of this week.
State Rep. Eddie Lumsden (R-Armuchee) released a summary of the legislative week in the Georgia House of Representatives. Lumsden said that in addition to bills related to the budget, the House has addressed the shortage of rural health care workers and also the need to recruit more educators in Georgia. Also, the Georgia House passed a resolution this past week that shows solidarity with the people of Ukraine and condemns Russia for their unwarranted attack on a neighboring country.
