The National Weather Service in Peachtree City, Georgia has issued a dense fog advisory for our area until 11 AM:
The Trion Fire Department and Hays Correctional Fire Department responded to a vehicle fire early on Tuesday morning. According to a post on social media, the car was sitting next to a mobile home. The vehicle was fully engulfed in flames. Firefighters were able to extinguish the fire without damage to the mobile home.
We have all seen it while scrolling Facebook, the “To regain friends and get rid of ads” posts. While there are plenty of predators who want to scam you on Facebook and other forms of social media, these aren’t really a scam – but according to Facebook, they are a hoax.
Newly elected State Senator Colton Moore is producing a weekly podcast which serves as his legislative report for constituents in Walker, Dade, Catoosa and Chattooga Counties. In the podcast, Senator Moore attacked Democrats in the state senate for opposing the rules package that was voted on last week. Moore also lauded the changes to the power given to the Senate Rules Committee and the Senate Rules Committee Chairman – a post that was held by Moore’s predecessor Jeff Mullis. State Rep. Eddie Lumsden (R-Armuchee) who represents Chattooga and a portion of Floyd County in the Georgia House has released his weekly legislative report. In the report, Rep. Lumsden talks about the election of a new house speaker and the calendar that was set for the General Assembly. Last Friday, a twenty-seven-year-old woman was arrested after being accused of shoplifting at Walmart in Trion. According to a report from the Chattooga County Sheriff’s Office, deputies were dispatched to Walmart after the woman was seen leaving the store with a jacket that she had not paid for. When deputies arrived on the scene, they saw the woman getting in a pickup truck near the Murphy gas station. Deputies stopped the driver who said the woman had just walked up to his truck and asked for a ride. However, witnesses said that the woman had arrived at Walmart in the same truck. Carry Meranda Trapp was arrested and charged with shoplifting. Walmart employees said that they believed that the driver of the truck had been involved in a separate shoplifting incident earlier that day, but didn’t have enough evidence to press charges.
A Rome man died after he was struck by a train in East Rome on Sunday. According to a Rome Police Department report: The trainmaster told police that he sounded the train horn when he saw 61-year-old Craig Dykes Rogers lying on the tracks. Rogers lifted his head and covered his ears, but did not move. The train was unable to stop and it struck Rogers. He was pronounced dead at 3:02 p.m.
The open enrollment period for health insurance ended on January 15th, and a record number of Georgia residents signed up for Georgia Affordable Health Care. In all over 860,000 people enrolled in the program. That is 8% more than last year, which figures out to be over 145,000 more this year than last year. While open enrollment has closed for this year, Georgians can still sign up for Healthcare.Gov plans under certain circumstances, such as the loss of health care coverage, marriage or divorce, the birth or adoption of a child, or a major change in income. Earlier, the federal government denied the state’s application to exit the HealthCare.Gov marketplace. While the state has resisted expanding Medicaid, a key part of Governor Kemp’s health care plans has been to provide low-income Georgians an opportunity to sign up for Medicaid if they meet monthly work, education or volunteer requirements.

For the second time in three days, a “fast talking” scam was reported to Summerville Police. Police were called to the Circle K on the Lyerly Highway on Saturday after the store manager found that a cash drawer was short $150. The manager said that two black men came into the gas station and purchased cigarettes and paid for them with a $50 bill. The two men began to “talk fast” to the cashier and ended up scamming her out of the original $50 plus a $100 bill. The description of the men is the same that was given to Summerville Police at the Dollar Tree last Thursday when two black men used “fast talking” to scam $150 from that store as well. Police retrieved video footage from the Circle K to try to identify the two thieves.
