In the latest report from the Georgia Department of Public Health, Chattooga County saw a slight decrease in the number of COVID-19 cases in the county.  The numbers are released on Wednesday of each week.  There were 12 new COVID-19 cases reported; that is down from 14 cases the previous week.  Statewide, 102 people died from COVID, up from 99 the previous week. The number of new reported cases dropped to 6,132, down a third from 9,126 reported cases through January 11, 2023.

The Second Avenue Bridge north of Broad Street in downtown Rome was blocked for a time Thursday afternoon after a pedestrian was struck by a vehicle. According to Rome Police, the pedestrian was thrown off the bridge and onto the path below after being hit by the northbound vehicle near Safe Lock and Kay. The pedestrian was transported to Atrium Health Floyd with what were believed to be serious injuries. Police say the vehicle left the road twice, and they are looking into the possibility that the driver had some sort of medical emergency.

There will be three council seats on the Summerville City Council up for grabs in November of this year.  This week, the City of Summerville announced qualifying for seats one, two and three.  Those seats are currently held by Rickey Hughes, Joe Money and Zach Martin.  The candidate qualifying period will be held at Summerville City Hall on August 21-25 from 8:30 AM until 5 PM and on Friday, August 25th from 8:30 AM – 4:30 PM.  The council seat qualifying fee is $108.  If you have any questions, you may contact Angela White, the Summerville City Clerk at 706-859-0900 extension 1307.

On January 19th, 2023, Agents with the Lookout Mountain Judicial Circuit Drug Task Force and the Walker County Sheriff Office SWAT Team executed two search warrants at 373 Rogers Road and 797 Lail Road in Chickamauga. Agents located a pill press, over two pounds of powder Fentanyl, over 1,000 suspected Fentanyl pills, three pounds of Marijuana, and a large amount of U.S. currency. In connection with these locations, the Hamilton County Narcotics Division and Hamilton County SWAT Team executed a search warrant at 5314 Dupont Street in East Ridge, Tennessee. Agents located a trafficking amount of Fentanyl and a firearm. Tennessee Agents arrested George Albert Watkins III “Tre”. Watkins will be charged with Trafficking Fentanyl and Possession of Marijuana with intent to Distribute in Georgia.
