You can expect to pay more at the pump now as the gas tax suspension in Georgia has expired.  Georgia Governor Brian Kemp had extended the suspension of fuel taxes until January 10, 2023.  At midnight Wednesday, the tax went back into place. That is going to add an extra 31 cents per gallon of gas.  When the governor first suspended the gas tax, gas was over $4.20 per gallon.  Earlier this week, gas prices in Northwest Georgia were around $2.80 per gallon.  The gas tax is not paid by your local gas station retailer but by the fuel distributors in the state. That means you may still find gas available that does not have the fuel tax added to it yet.  But any fuel delivered past midnight on January 11, 2023 will have the gas tax added.  The added tax will likely push the average price for a gallon of gas back over the $3 per gallon mark in the upcoming days.

On Sunday, Chattooga County Sheriff’s Deputies responded to a call about an accident at the intersection of Stoleman Road and U.S. Highway 27 in Trion.  When deputies arrived on the scene, they saw the driver standing outside his vehicle with the driver’s side door open.  According to the report from the sheriff’s office, the man was “swaying” while attempting to stand up.  Sixty-year-old Jeffery Allan Deboard told a deputy that he had eight beers to drink before the accident.  Deboard was arrested on DUI charges and was booked into the Chattooga County Jail.

A Chattooga County man with several outstanding warrants was arrested at B&B Market in Trion after he attempted to steal food items from the store.

According to the latest numbers released by the Georgia Department of Public Health, there was one COVID-19 death reported in Chattooga County over the past week.  Another death in Chattooga County was listed as “probable”.   The numbers are released weekly on Wednesdays.  The total number of COVID-19 cases reported for Chattooga County over the week was 14 – up one from last week. The last COVID-19 death reported in Chattooga County was at the first of November, 2022.

A Chattooga County Sheriff’s Deputy responded to a call about a nude woman at the park in Lyerly on Friday of last week.  According to a report released by the sheriff’s office, the call came in shortly after 4 PM on Friday.  When a deputy arrived on the scene he saw a woman – nearly nude, according to the report – in the park and the woman was screaming.  When the deputy asked the woman where her pants were, she screamed at the deputy.  Forty-five-year-old Sandy Waynette Wilson was charged with disorderly conduct and public indecency and was booked into the Chattooga County Jail.

A Chattooga County man was arrested for stalking after repeatedly tapping on a woman’s window and threatening her at her father’s home.

Georgia football fans will celebrate the Bulldogs’ national title this weekend with a parade and ceremony. Organizers say it will be a parade like no other in Athens this Saturday, commemorating the Bulldog’s second straight national championship win. The upcoming festivities follow Georgia’s pummeling of the TCU Horned Frogs 65 to 7 in the College Football Playoff title game Monday night. Stadium gates will open at noon, the parade down Lumpkin Street to Sanford Stadium begins at 12:30; a Dawg Walk at 1 PM, ending with a formal ceremony at 2 PM.
