James Robert Thompson, Obit (M)

Mr. James Robert Thompson, age 81, of Summerville, GA, passed away Saturday, January 13, 2024, at his residence.

Mr. Thompson was born September 24, 1942, in Summerville, GA, son of the late James Vaughn Thompson and Annie Lou Burton Thompson. He was a member of the West Fifth Street Church of Christ, and prior to his retirement, was employed with Dalton Paving and Construction.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by sisters, Emma Burse and Hattie Mosteller; and a brother, Joe Thompson.

Those left to cherish his memory include his wife, Valerie Bankston Thompson; daughters, Hattie Williams, Erika Bankston, and Carolyn Williams; a sister, Ivy Nell Haynes; several grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

Funeral services for Mr. Thompson will be held at 2:00 P.M. Sunday, January 21, 2024, from the Mason Funeral Home Chapel with Min. John Lewis officiating. Interment will follow in Oak Hill Cemetery.

Mr. Thompson will be in state at Mason Funeral Home and the family will receive friends from 1:00 P.M. until the hour of service on Sunday.

Mary Ellen Pettyjohn, Obit (C)

Mrs. Mary Ellen Pettyjohn, age 53 of Rome, Georgia formerly of Summerville, passed away Monday, January 15, 2024 in a Rome Hospital.

Mrs. Pettyjohn was born in Rome, Georgia on April 3, 1970, daughter of the late William Bell and Elsie Allen Bell. She was a homemaker and was of the Christian Faith. In addition to her parents, Mrs. Pettyjohn was preceded in death by a sister, Tracey Ledford.

Mrs. Pettyjohn is survived by her husband, Terry Pettyjohn; son, Justin Pettyjohn; daughters, Lori Trail, Ashley Pettyjohn and Brittany Pettyjohn; brother, Milo Bell; grandchildren, Remy Totherow, Heather Totherow, Dustin Clayton, Devin Pettyjohn, Destiny Evans, Drake Kellar, Jayden Pettyjohn, Everly Scott, Layla Scott and Trinity Scott; and a number of nieces and nephews.

Funeral Services for Mrs. Pettyjohn will be held Tuesday, January 16, 2024 at 6:00 P.M. in the Chapel of the Coffman Funeral Home with Rev. David Dutton officiating. Private Interment will follow at a later date.

Mrs. Pettyjohn will be in state at the Coffman Funeral Home and the family will receive friends Tuesday from 4:00 P.M. until the funeral hour.

Mrs. Patricia Ann Shamblin Freeman, age 73, of Tion, GA died Sunday, January 14, 2024 in a Calhoun, GA nursing home. Mrs. Freeman was born December 29, 1950, in Trion, GA, the daughter of Clifford and Pauline Jones Shamblin. She was formerly employed with Tate Furniture Store, loved walking, football and oldies music.

Survivors include, son and daughter-in-law, Toy and Nikki Freeman, brother, Cliff & Gwen Shamblin, sister, Debbie Yancey, grandchild, Lorna Leigh Freeman, nieces, Kimberly & John Dickson, nephew, Richard Yancey.

Graveside service at West Hill Cemetery to be announced at a later date.

Mr. Melvin J. Jackson, SR, age 65, of Summerville, GA, passed away Sunday January 14, 2024, at his residence.

Mr. Jackson was born March 13, 1958, in Summerville, GA, the son of Amos Carlton and Vinnie Elizabeth Huggins Jackson. Mr. Jackson was employed with the City of Summerville in the Water Dept., a member of the Chelsea Baptist Church, enjoyed playing bass at church, hunting and fishing.

Mr. Jackson was preceded in death by his parents; sisters, Beverly Jackson, Mildred Miller, Martha Miller; brother, Ed Jackson.
Survivors include children, Jesse & Christina Jackson, Jeremy & Shaunda Jackson, Lucas & Tiffany Jackson, Garth & Stephanie Gentry, brother, Carlton Jackson, sisters, Annie Culbert, Linda Jackson, Betty Broome, Joan Keef, 11 grandchildren, 4 great-grandchildren.

Funeral service will be held 1:00 p.m. Wednesday January 17, 2024 at the Mason Funeral Home with Rev. Bobby Lemons and Rev. Larry Reynolds officiating interment in the Garrett Cemetery. Active pallbearers, James Rutledge, Steven Dodd, Carlton Jackson, Eddie Jackson, Samuel Rutledge, Zach Rutledge. Honorary pallbearers, Members of Chelsea Baptist Church.

Mr. Jackson will be in state at the Mason Funeral Home and the family will receive friends Wednesday from 12:00 noon until the service hour.
