On Friday, February 4^th the student council members of CHS hosted their second annual “Pink Out” game to raise money for breast cancer research. This has become a rather significant tradition here at Chattooga High that seems to bring joy and unity to all around. Prior to the game hot pink ‘Pink Out’ shirts were sold for $12.00. Upon arrival at school everyone could easily tell that the student body was in the pink spirit, for even the halls were decorated in a sea of  pink. At the game players wore pink warm-ups and pink shoe laces. In the gym lobby students sold raffle tickets (for prizes donated by local businesses), baked goods, and ‘Relay for Life’ stars in honor or memory of cancer patients. Donations were also accepted. CHS Student Council Advisor, Charis Sumner stated that a little over $500 was raised to donate to research. Once again, the community stood together in unity to honor and remember those loved ones who have suffered through this terrible disease and to help find a cure.

The Junior/Senior Prom is coming up quickly on March 26^th. The Prom is a party hosted by the junior class held in honor of members of the senior class. Any CHS student who attends the prom as a junior or senior is required to pay prom dues, which are now $65.00 and will go up to $70.00 after March 1st. Most students will pay as juniors and attend the prom both their junior and senior years for the one fee. However, if a student decides not to attend their junior year and wants to attend their senior year, they still must pay dues. The prom dues cover each student and their guest unless the guest is also a CHS student that still owes dues.

            Any student in ISI or suspended out-of-school cannot attend the prom unless the assigned discipline has been completed. No reimbursement will be provided to anyone that gets suspended or expelled at the time of the prom. No student of Crossroads Academy will be permitted into the prom. Also, no guest over the age of twenty years old, or younger than a high school freshman will be admitted. All guests must provide a picture ID at the door. Students will be required to leave the dance for inappropriate or suggestive dancing or violation of any other rules. Violation of rules by a student or date will result in the both of them being forced to leave the event.

            Dress attire is also very important at the prom. Ladies are asked to wear a formal gown or pants’ suit. Tasteful cocktail dresses or “short dresses” are also permitted. Men are asked to wear a tuxedo or a coat and tie with slacks. No denim will be permitted. Ladies will be allowed to wear strapless dresses as well as halters or dresses with straps as long as they do not plunge lower than the bust line. No excessive cleavage will be allowed. Also, the back may not be lower than the natural waistline. No midriff or abdominal cut-outs are allowed and slits below the waist may not be higher than finger-tip level. No see-through material will be permitted, either. Men’s shirts must also be tucked in at all times and pants must be on their waist.             Remember, the prom is a night of fun! This year’s theme will be “Wonderland”, inspired by the film Alice in Wonderland. The prom committee has several great ideas and it looks as if it is going to be a beautiful night. We look forward to seeing you there in your formal wear!

On Monday, January 24^th a free competition cheerleading clinic was held at the CHS gym, in which three Hot Shots representatives brought equipment and worked with the kids. From 1:00-2:00 was designated for current 5^th-7^th graders that are interested in trying out for the 2011-2012 Chattooga Middle School Competition Cheerleading Squad (which will also be coached by high school cheer coach Liza Morgan.) For this group Hot Shots personnel worked with the kids on basic jumps, motions, round offs, and standing back-handsprings. From 2:00-3:00 was designated for current 8^th-11^th graders (both male and female) with an interest in high school competition cheerleading. There were many in attendance, including three males. For this group Hot Shots personnel worked with the athletes on elite jumps, advanced tumbling passes, and a wide variety of stunts ranging from partner stunts to basket tosses to co-ed style stunts.                

                Next year’s high school and middle school cheerleading seasons look very promising. High school tryouts have now been set for February 21^st-25^th. For additional information, contact Liza Morgan at Chattooga High School.

The Chattooga Indians wrestling team doesn’t pull any punches when it comes to their skills on the mat. With half of their season over, the team has celebrated several victories and continues to look for future pins. This past weekend the North West Georgia Duals wrestling tournament was held at CHS. Ten teams from across the North West Georgia area traveled to Chattooga to compete on Saturday, January 22^nd  . The Indians took 5^th place beating Pepperell in the last round.  Coach Clay Livingston commented that junior Brandon Siffles had an exceptionally good week in wrestling as he went 9 and 0 in the past three matches including Saturday’s event. The Indians will travel to a duals match at Clark Central Satruday, January 29^th , and a tournament in Dade County on February 4^th and 5^th.

This past weekend, February 4^th – 5^th, the Indians competed in the Area 7AA Championships. Junior Brandon Siffles and Sophomore J.J. Blankenship were named Area Champions. Freshman Drew Jackson placed 4^th and Senior Aaron Carillo placed 5^th  . Blankenship, Jackson and Siffles will wrestle this weekend, February 11-12, at Sectionals in Sonoraville. If they place well, they will continue to the state finals in Gwinett the next weekend. Congratulations to these athletes and good luck grapplers!  

In the midst of tough economic times Chattooga High School teachers have learned to make money for their programs through the use of grant funds. Recently, several CHS organizations were awarded funds to support their endeavors from the Tilloston-Menlo Charitable Foundation. As stated in their mission, “The Tilloston Foundation seeks to support, promote, improve and maintain the health, educational and cultural institutions serving the City of Menlo, Chattooga County and some surrounding areas.” The grant awards financial assistance grants in areas such as educational and individual skills improvement, health care, community enhancement, and the arts, culture and social welfare. When grant applications were being accepted in November of 2010, CHS staff members followed the “ask and ye shall receive” mentality, and quickly submitted all paperwork with high hopes of attaining needed funds to further their purposes.  The CHS staffers were pleased when they learned in December that they were awarded varying amounts of money per their requests. The following CHS faculty were awarded grant funds and are using them accordingly:The CHS baseball team was awarded $15,000 to use towards building storage lockers, buying materials for the new facility at the baseball complex, and various field upgrades. The CHS softball program was awarded $10,000. According to coach Jeff Bennett the funds will be used to upgrade the softball field. Bennett states, “we plan on putting 2 loads of dirt and infield mix on the infield and put in an irrigation system in the outfield.” Claudia Bagley, a teacher in the Career Technology and Instruction (CTI) Department, received funds to send 3 CTI students to the State HOSA Leadership Conference in Athens. The students participated in several leadership activities and learned valuable career building skills.  The CHS Media Center was awarded $1500 which went toward the purchase of new books.

The Tilloston-Menlo Charitable Foundation is a wonderful organization and CHS appreciates the opportunity to build for their future through receiving these funds.
